The Old Empyrean
The vast realm to the south of the Greenwold
was known, until recently, as “the Empyrean” - the cradle of human civilization, where gods
used to walk the earth beside mortals.
For untold millennium, since the earliest
days of humanity’s recorded history, this
realm had been the domain of a despotic
demigod. As narcissistic as she was powerful,
the Empyrean named the realm after herself.
Bound by ancient magic, she could
not set foot outside its borders. Instead she
amused herself by providing for her subjects
all that they could ever need. In exchange she
demanded their fervent worship, enforcing
absolute loyalty through the state religion,
and damning those that rebelled to a quasi-death as living ghosts. Nevertheless, the
Empyrean produced cities of sensational
wonder, while the lands around them de-
scended into dysfunction and savagery.
All that came to an end when the Empyrean attempted to break her wards, and
claim the Greenwold for her own. A group
of heroes stepped forth to protect their freedom - defeating the demigod’s deadly generals and overthrowing the Empyrean in her
own palace.
Her vast land, once ruled by an iron fist,
is now up for grabs. With no functioning
economy and a populous devoted to the
worship of a departed demigod, the cities of
the Empyrean collapsed overnight. The Old
Empyrean, as it is now called, has become the
new frontier.
Those that called that land their home
either emigrated to the Greenwold or established new communities in the husks of the
old. At the same time, new settlers traveled
south from the Greenwold, seeking to carve
out their own domains. The realm is still filled
with unbelievable riches left over from its
heyday, as well as powerful relics from the
mythical age of the gods. Adventure seekers,
treasure hunters and settlers alike now explore the once forbidden land, competing with
the hordes of gnolls, ogres, cursed undead, and
newly risen warlords for space and resources.
