Where are they now?
In 1558 A.D. London, the Sabbat rebellion, the Camarilla takeover and the crushing of the last bastion of an Anarch state unraveled in a single day. The chaos postmodern can only be described as a bloodautorium, more vampires perished in a single night then at any other recorded event in the 16th century, in fact, even by 1886 the vampire population of London is yet to reach its 16th century peeks. The first inquisition was a brutal affair that followed and while the Sabbat uprising was the final mass trigger that would lead countless vampires around Europe to their final deaths, it would also mark the true establishment that is the Camarilla tradition in modern nights.
There would be no more Anarch states or Sabbat or any other who would challenge the convention of crones, it was clear that the Camarilla way was the only way and while not as pretty as some would try to make it seem, its a system that worked. It took nearly a century for the fires of the inquisition to die out, eventually however vampires returned to a life of secrecy to which all have now become accustomed to.
What follows is a rough account of what happened to some of the individuals and organizations from the 16th era of the first inquisition.
Leopold's Hunters
Though it was rumored that the organization was originally created by a vampire who saw fit to use mortals as weapons, it became painfully clear that as a supernatural mortal fighting force, vampires, would not remain in control of these holy warriors beyond the 16th century. Many cells around Europe and even in the new world have formed and its unclear whether they work as a organized unit part of a grand conspiracy or if they truly are islands of resistors against the dark force that vampires and other super natural beings represent in the world of mortals. Suffice to say every city has its hunters and they are not easy to root out and are as dangerous and often as bold as anyone can remember. Most vampires are wise enough to truly fear hunters, mortals they may be, they are resistant to the effects of the kindred blood and seem physically defined by powers specifically designed to root out and kill vampires. In the nights since the 16th century vampires have been disappearing and while its sometimes suggested that this is nothing but bed time stories told to impressionable neonates to keep them in line, there have been some fairly verifiable accounts of kidnappings and stakings to make hunters certainly feel real enough. The real question Elders have is of their purpose. It would seem that if it was as simple as killing any vampire they find, kindred and hunter would be at war and yet no such conflict exists. They are exterminators, but there is no understanding of how they choose their targets and why. Its often suggested that the Camarilla at the highest level still have some semblance of control over these rogues in the night, but then again, the Camarilla claim to have control over a great many things one could doubt. What vampires do know and understand is that in the modern nights of 1886 London, Vampires are not the only predators about. The Ley Line's
The Ley Lines is less an organization or person and more a concept, but in 16th century London it was a hot topic among the Elder elite who discovered the true threat of these points of power. Perhaps the most significant discovery was made by the Tremere who pointed out that Lay Lines is not something supernaturals like Vampires or Mages could leverage. This was strictly a mortal business and the only ones threatened by its existence were supernaturals and very specifically vampires. Whatever the threat was, whatever purpose it would serve, however never came to fruition. Something was clearly disturbed in the course of the Sabbat rebellion and though the Tremere and assumingly others continue to study the phenomenon known as The Ley Lines, but by 1886 at least no ill effects have been suffered that anyone is aware of. The study of Ley Lines continues behind the closed doors of the Tremere chantry's where such secrets are kept though few are the wiser, in fact, the term Ley Lines and magical centers of power are largely disregarded by your average vampire in the street as vodoo nonsense and the subject is at least to the masses a largely dead one.Helena
The force that is Helena is something of a mystery. She appeared as suddenly as she disappeared and the story of her role in London in 1558 melted to legends and myth as so many of her appearances do. By the early 18th century rumors that Helena was seen in the new world surfaced and more then one Camarilla eyebrow was raised when in 1822 and again in 1876 she was rumored to be in Europe, but little if anything can be confirmed other then to simply say that she is out there somewhere. Whatever interests she had in London, her business seems to be concluded, though for local Vampires of London it is quite widely rumored that some of the elders in the city maintain relationships with the infamous Methuselah. The Werewolves
When the Camarilla announced a new prince of London in 1558, permanently changing the status of the city to firmly Camarilla, the wolves did not need to be asked to leave. It was never made clear exactly what their interest in London were, but it was none the less quite a historic and never again repeated event that werewolves were allowed into a European city. In fact, even by 1886, contact with the wolves has remained very limited, though not without incident. Its become quite clear that werewolves do not take kindly to vampires and the Camarilla society as it is, treats them with equal disregard. Werewolves however like many animals who suffer at the hands of the raping of the natural world have become more and more aggressive towards the defense of their natural territories and while travel has become considerably safer thanks to the rails built across Europe, the rumors of incidents persist. Perhaps the most freighting stories in modern nights (1886) is that werewolves spawn within the cities spontaneously. These situations are quickly covered up, handled like any other masquerade breach, but it has been known to happen that some fanger awakens in the city and tears the place up before he is put down. Why this happens has many theories, the most prominent is outlined in the manifesto by a Tremere writer called "cause and effect" in which he describes a natural reaction of wolf population growth that matches kindred population growth. While some basic data was presented to support the hypothesis, like most intellectual books that suggest the Camarilla is not in complete control, it was quickly discredited as nonsense. Suffice to say like many bumps in the night, the wolves are out there and there purpose and agenda are as mysterious as their origins. The Anarchs
Unlike the Sabbat, the Camarilla is considerably more docile towards the youthful ideologies of free state dreamers that are the Anarchs. While certainly its tolerance for active agents is zero, putting them down like any other heresy, there is at least an understanding why a newborn might not immediately embrace the Camarilla. Anarchs are seen largely as immature vampires who a sire should be looking after and indeed it is the practice of the Camarilla to penalize the sire not the childe when it comes to controlling this insignificant movement. Still every city has its Anarchs and London is no exception. As one might expect its largely a movement for the young, though there was a time when elders entertained such concepts, history has proven that the outcome of such ideology is extremely dangerous. The Camarilla rightfully presumes that these underground movement meet in the remote corners of the city, plotting their insignificant acts of rebellion and certainly now and again a Sheriff must get involved to crush the hopes and dreams of some young foolish vampire who thinks himself wiser then an elder Camarilla but in modern day London, Anarchs are on their best day a minor nuisance. In Europe in general the movement is largely dead. In the new world however it is a different story, indeed it is in many ways the rumor of strong Anarch movements there that both keeps elder vampires in Europe and young vampires venturing across the sea. There are no official Anarch cities anywhere, new world included yet, but certainly if there is a hot spot for Anarch activity, it is in the lawless lands of the Americas, a place that the old world vampires are yet to pay any real attention to in 1886.The Inquisition
While it continued to rage well into the late 17th century, the age of reason, technology and industrialization have slowly but surely killed god at least as we knew him in the dark ages. Certainly religious persecution continues to exist in full force and as history will dictate will get far worse before it gets better, but burning people at the stake for being witches or claiming someone to be a demon is seen as the ramblings of mad men. Certainly kindred society has played its role in demystifying the vampire myth. In fact, they actively encourage it as a myth, vampires appearing in popular novels like Bram Stokers Dracula and the development of the motion picture camera soon to be the next cultural medium will help to expand the idea of vampires as stories rather then reality. The fires of the inquisition will not soon be forgotten by the elders and rightfully so as the risks of exposure become more likely as mortal technology develops. This is why we have the Camarilla, the masquerade and the rest of the traditions. It is all about controlling kindred society to prevent horrifically dangerous situations like the inquisition from repeating. The threat of another inquisition always lingers and while many modern vampires are too young to feel that threat personally, there are plenty of elders around to remind everyone how bad things can really get.
