Dragonsire

General Description

The Dragonsire was a much bigger kind of Dragonnets. The Dragonnet roams the wilds of Northern Alven to this day but the Dragonsire is now extinct.

Dragonsires were also thought to roam the northern regions of Alven at the time of the Ancestors.  A male Dragonsire was supposed to be three times the size of a Dragonnet and a formidable creature. As Dragonsires have been extinct for around two millennia, it is now difficult to separate the myth from reality.

Over the centuries, Dragonsires have been the subjects of stories and legends. Dragonsires' descriptions depend on the few tomes that have been found from the Old Era. The creatures were described with scales of different colours: most of them were silver in colour but others were thought to be darker, maybe pewter in colour. Others might have had a mauve or red tinge to their silver.

Their ears were elongated and erect with tufts of brighter colours, and on their forefront,  they sported a pair of huge curved horns. The tail was very long and spiked, and stories show that they might have been the Dragonsire's most dangerous. Very mobile, they were able to whip and kill an enemy or a rival instantly. Furthermore, their scales could only be pierced by a power rod or sword.

What is more disputed is the level of intelligence of the Dragonsire. In some myths and legends, the Dragonsire is a sentient creature with a level of intelligence as keen as a human being. In others, Dragonsires are tricked by humans or gods because of their greedy and short-sighted nature. No one is really sure what is the truth.

Geography

Dragonsires were denizens of the wild north of Alven, most likely what is now considered The Lostlands. They were particularly resistant to the harsh cold of the northern continent. Their body heat was recorded to melt the snow and ice around them. Their breath could come out as boiling mist and was very dangerous for the soft skins of most humanoids.

Archaeology

On the The Lost Coast, archaeological sites have revealed frescoes where Dragonsires can be seen flying above snowy mountains. Some paintings also revealed that Dragonsires could be ridden. Ancestors' figures are seen on the back of huge Dragonsires while taking part in aerial fights.

Myths

The reason for their disappearance is unknown. Some ancient texts refer to the Dragonsires following the gods into the otherworlds (planes of existence). As in the story of The Return of Leweyd the Many-Ones, some legends talk about dragonsires coming back to Alven in times of crisis.

Dragonsires are still part of children's stories.  These stories would have been transmitted orally from one generation to another. Most stories about dragonsires would have originated from the Old Era. Dragonsires are now fully associated with children's tales and are rarely part of epics and songs for adults.

The most well-known is about a green dragonsire playing peekaboo in the forest. The song is called: Where is Greenheart now? The song is used to teach children about the different kinds of trees in the forest. The children run to hide behind from one type of tree to another.

Greenheart, Greenheart,
Where is your heart?

Behind the tall oak, behind the oak

Greenheart, Greenheart,
where is your heart?
Behind the red rowan, behind the rowan

Greenheart, Greenheart,
where is your heart?
Behind the golden beech, behind the beech,

Greenheart, Greenheart,
where is your heart?
Behind the silver birch, behind the birch,

etc.
