What is a Denstag?
Marvoleth is a denstag.
The Denstag is a small wooly mammoth that lives in the northern region of
Cauldfell. The denstags roam the valleys of
The Cauld Braes, the longest and widest mountain range of Cauldfell. These fierce creatures sport a prehensile trunk and large ears as well as an impressive pair of tusks. They are also covered in shaggy brown or grey fur. A denstag is roughly 10 hands (between 2 or 3 meters) high. Denstags are omnivores and will eat whatever they can get their trunk on. They are intelligent, sociable, and formidable predators. In the mountains of Cauldfell, their main quarries are small deer, rabbits etc. They are also partial to some greenery and have acquired a taste for soft ferns and other grasses growing in the forest's clearings.
For centuries,
Clan Renade and
Clan Bearwode have been able to domesticate denstags. Denstags make good hunting and traveling companions. Their strength and resilience also make them useful for carrying and pulling loads. However, they cannot be ridden like horses. The clansmen have also found some martial use to them. Denstags can be trained to attack in small groups and can be a devastating force in battle.
Who is Marvoleth?
Marvoleth is a domesticated denstag who belongs to the Archivist
Delian Longway of Clan Bearwode. Delian brought her beloved denstag to the training grounds of Highfort, the capital city of Alven when she was a young woman and entered the Archive. They formed an inseparable pair and their exploits in the field of crime detection are legendary throughout Cauldfell and
Sutherlands. Now, due to the publication of their adventures in the form of serials, their fame has reached the extremities of the clan lands and beyond. Delian and Marvoleth's stories have a strong readership in
The Frencal Republic, across Alven's southern borders.
Marvoleth's Exploits
Delian is now in her 55th year and a seasoned archivist of
The Order of the Blaze - an order who finds truth and dispenses justice under the watchful eyes of the all-powerful god
Belen. In her long career as an
Inquirer, Delian brought many criminals to the justice of the Archive and the Thane. She would not have been so successful without her close partnership with Marvoleth. The denstag's uncanny sensory abilities have made the pair a redoubtable foe for those who flaunt the laws of the clanlands.
In one of their most famous cases, Marvoleth and Delian managed to foil an attempt on the late Thane's life by the members of a sect of magicians calling themselves
The Breath of the Wind. The culprits were tracked, found, and captured after a three week's chase by the remarkable pair and it was Marvoleth's unerring pursuit through the difficult terrain of
The Great Towers Range which was key to the successful apprehension of the criminals.
Aww, what a sweet relationship. I love when characters have really close animal companions.
