A Loremaster is one of the most experienced member of a local chapter of the
Hunter's Guild. These hunters are more scholarly than most, offering their knowledge and guidance to other guild members. The advice of a Loremaster has proven the difference between a successful hunt and an untimely demise for many a hunter.
Duties
Loremasters have several key responsibilities. The most well known of these is to guide new hunters, arming them with the knowledge they need to survive, to recognize the monsters that serve the
Powers, and how to defeat them. As hunters grow in experience and power, they tend to rely less and less upon their Loremaster's assistance, though most return when faced with particularly difficult prey.
The second is to preserve their knowledge above all else. Some compile tomes of knowledge, bestiaries that reveal the secrets of the Powers, but this has its own risks - large collections of knowledge about the Powers seem to draw their direct attention, and several notable archives of the Guild's knowledge have been destroyed. Generally, it is considered safer for Loremasters to work to preserve themselves as long as possible, grooming a successor to take over when they inevitably fall. The most difficult part of this task for many Loremasters is resisting the allure of the hunt as much as possible, only taking easier prey they can be confident in destroying in order to sustain themselves. Thus, the best Loremasters are usually those who are sustained by one of the more restrained Powers, as those who form a pact with
The Hunter are particularly prone to seeking ever more dangerous prey.
The most secretive duty of a Loremaster is to maintain ties to other Loremasters. By doing this, the Loremasters of the Hunter's Guild share knowledge of the Powers, and ensure that in the event that a Loremaster falls without having prepared a successor, one can be trained up by their more experienced peers. This is also a key part in maintaining cooperation between different regions, and the degree to which such cooperation takes place is often a direct result of how well the Loremasters of those regions get along. But the most important of these duties is to coordinate efforts to prevent any Power from ever
Manifestatiing itself and claiming a part of the world as its own worldly kingdom.
