Tulwood Telegraph Building

The Tulwood Telegraph Building is the headquarters of the Tulwood Telegraph Company. Found on the waterfront at the northern edge of the docks district, it serves as the primary connection hub for telegraph lines from other cities to the people of Tulwood. It also offers relay services for sending messages between cities that don't have a direct line.

History

The Tulwood Telegraph Building was originally built as one of the many warehouses surrounding Tulwood's expansive dockyard. It housed a variety of trade goods over the course of about two centuries, with sections of wall and roof being replaced as they wore out. It was eventually acquired by the Tulwood Telegraph Company as an end point to test their new design for underwater telegraph cables. Since the development of a successful cable design, several underwater telegraph lines have been laid, connecting to major cities throughout the world.   Concurrent with these lines being laid, Tulwood Telegraph had extensive renovations done, customizing the building to be more suitable as a telegraph hub. The warehouse space has had a floor built halfway up, creating 2 floors for cable connections and complex switchboards that allow a signal to be relayed through from one city to another city, or out a local line feeding into the various Telegraph Offices distributed throughout the city of Tulwood, so that messages can reach their intended recipient faster.   The northwestern corner of the building has also had 3 further floors added, extending through where the original roof of the warehouse used to be. Officially, all three of these floors contain the managerial offices of the Tulwood Telegraph Company, built to accomodate the increased workload in administering the international network. However, in reality, only the top floor houses Company offices. The other two are staffed by operators employed by the Tulwood Navy, where they transcribe messages being sent to other cities. One floor collects domestic messages sent out from Tulwood, and the other collects messages intended to be sent from one city to another. Obviously, the existence of this operation is kept secret, and most messages that are recorded are classified as non-relevant and destroyed after being assessed by a Naval intelligence officer.
