Dyrewolves

Large, deadlier, and far more intelligent than regular wolves - Dyrewolves typically roam the mountainous and wooded areas of Eastern Alwaus, however their presence is not uncommon in areas outside of that as well. While they typically avoid settlements, they have been known to prey on outcropping farms and outposts, often taking livestock, or even a stray person, as a meal for their pack. Their social structure and behavior is quite similar to that of a more mundane wolf, however their interactions among st themselves makes it clear that have a high level of cunning and intelligence. While they have no official knowledge of the Common Language, communication efforts with the species have made it clear they are able to understand intent behind verbal statements, and there is even evidence to suggest they may respect specific boundaries and treaties made between different human factions.

Over twice the size of a normal wolf, a single Dyrewolf is more than enough to take down a human solider. Their razor sharp claws and powerful jaws make short work of all but the hardiest of armour. But where the Dyrewolf is truly dangerous, is in within it's pack. Travelling in packs as large as 30 in some cases - Dyrewolf attacks have the precision and deadliness of trained soldiers. Military commanders must be contingent of the movements of direwolf packs in areas they are campaigning, as the beasts have little fear of sword or spear.
