A simple but ingenious modification of the common lantern, the hooded lantern uses a metal hood and glass lens to focus the lantern’s light, making the beam travel farther and also making the light harder to spot when it’s not directed squarely at an observer.
A lit hooded lantern provides light and removes b added to checks due to darkness. (If it becomes important to determine how far the light reaches, a focused hooded lantern’s light can reach out to medium range.) In addition, your character can use a hooded lantern and not automatically be spotted at night or in the dark (although they still need to add b to any Stealth checks they make, because the light still makes it easier to be noticed).
