When carrying a weapon or wearing armour and gear with the Shabby quality, decrease your character's Social Status by the highest rank of Shabby available to them. This means that a character with a Social Status of 4 wearing an armour with Shabby 1, a piece of gear with Shabby 1, and a weapon with Shabby 2 would increase their prestige by 2 to a total of 6 - not by 4 to a total of 8.
