Sternoquill
While most literate commonfolk and nobility The Thirteen Kingdoms(organization:51600eb8-a76f-452e-af97-ef15a8da1521) are limited to the quill or pen, those with either the talent for @[Operating Enchantment or a coin purse deep enough to commission an Operator can instead rely on the use of sternoquill. While technical a general term referring to any magically enchanted voice-to-text artifact, sternoquills are most often referring to the the rather cumbersome contraptions that are built into the desks of high ranking scholars or literary minded members of the human nobility.
The magical methods with which the device operates vary from model to model, however the majority are enchanted to respond to the voice of a single designated person to ensure minimal auditory cross-contamination. Once properly calibrated, the designated speaker can activate the device with a key phrase and then begin speaking freely, as the sternoquil rapidly transcribes every word spoken. The accuracy of sternoquils often leads much to be desired, however the more expensive and rare artifacts are said to operate on near perfect precision (at least when properly calibrated).
Unfortunately the price and expertise required to not only procure the device, but maintain it through the years make them impractical for most people in Alwaus. Often they are purchased with good intentions but quickly abandoned by those unwilling or unable to continue their maintenance - especially when employing a scribe is not only more affordable but far more reliable. Those that require large amounts of text to be drafted, or wish to have something secretive to transcribe are perhaps the ones best suited for owning a sternoquill.
Rarity
Uncommon outside of universities, the vast majority of sternoquills found in noblemen and wealthy merchant offices aren't calibrated frequently enough to be properly functional.
