Godslayer

The disgrace of Lord Karl Neverwoods, the best mediocre dancer in the land, is a tale that few will forget. However the real tragedy of the story is that the telling of it covered up his previous, equally ridiculous attempt to buy his way to fame and prestige.   Karl was not a talented man, but he had a decent enough fortune from his family's business, and sought to make a name for himself. Daring Heights was a town tailor-made for seekers of opportunity like him, and so it was no surprise that he moved there as soon as he heard the news of its existence. Business however, was not among Karl's strong suits - he had very few of those, and while he muddled through he found himself a moderate-to-small fish in an ever expanding pond - an unacceptable situation.   If it was a name, he wanted, the names that people spoke about often included the adventurers of the Dawnlands, and he started picking up on one name in particular - Grandmaster Varis Nailo - the Godslayer. Lord Neverwoods became moderately obsessed with the tales of Varis the Godslayer and while he never dared seek the man out in his compound in the northwest side of town, he dreamt of holding a title of such prestige.   But money buys all things, does it not? It was the bards who sang this name out over and over in the taverns of Daring Heights, and bards always needed coin. So Lord Neverwoods commissioned more than ten local bards to each write a song about him and his exploits, and explicitly told them to call him the Godslayer, too.   This plan would have been merely peculiar, but Karl's real strong suit was foolishness, and so he paid all of the bards entirely upfront.   "Karl Neverwould the God's Layer" - a song about his life as a celestial bricklayer, was perhaps the most flattering song that emerged from these composers. The rest ranged from the lewd to the downright insulting. After they were each performed in sequence at one hilarious night at the Three Headed Dragon, Karl quietly paid each of the bards double to never play these songs again.   'Godslayer' it turns out, is a hard title to buy.
