The Chase Wondercart
Education in Daring Heights was, until recently, left to a single institution - a small school run by a non-binary elf named Jasprin Maroak. The opening of the Academy meant that there was a possibility of higher learning for a handful of older students prepared to apprentice themselves, and also the orphanage of Thia's Refuge has also begun providing a place of basic education, which has taken a little of the pressure off of Jasprin's increasingly crowded schoolhouse.
Working with Jasprin though, is Eleanor Chase - a human woman with the build and presence of a prize fighter (she was), usually seen with a plain-hilted longsword strapped to her back. Eleanor drives the cart that picks students up in the morning and delivers them home at the end of the day. Having someone capable of defending their children keeps parents assured as she rides around town, but the reason the students are always delighted to see Eleanor's cart coming around the corner is the stories.
If Eleanor is to be believed (a hotly debated topic amongst the Maroak Schoolhouse students), she fought in great battles in at least a dozen different nations in Faerûn, has spoken to kings and queens, spent years wandering the forests and hills of the world and visited the greatest temples of all the gods in the world. As her horse trots down the street to the next house in the list, Eleanor regails the children with incredible tales where she is always in the centre of them but which also happen to include key details about history, geography, religion and nature. She and Jasprin have long worked out a system to ensure that her stories usually are at least tangentially related to upcoming lessons, though Jasprin does have to remind students that there are more important details to the Third Troll War than exactly where Eleanor Chase was at the time.
Increasingly, partly to lessen the workload on Jasprin all day, Eleanor has been tasked with taking some of the children on field trips to different parts of the city, ranging as far as the edge of the Feythorn Forest. As one of the first people to arrive in Daring Heights (so she says), Eleanor is always able to provide a deep historical knowledge of the local area.
As someone who takes pride in her work, Eleanor has over time added increasing levels of decoration to her cart. It's wooden sides are painted yellow with intricate designs of flowers and swords, with a cloth covering for the rain and the cold dyed a sky-blue. The benches in the back of the cart are covered in thick furs which Eleanor swears are from a pair of fire-breathing bears she once encountered. Regardless of the fur's true origins, Eleanor's thick frame sitting atop the marigold cart is a sight that delights all of the children in town.
