The Shattered Moon

Five shards. Why five? The Moon, our guiding light, split into five for a reason. Perhaps five is a holy number? There were five landmasses of the isle, and now there are four... split into five kingdoms. A coincidence or sign? Is the fifth shard, in the center, different somehow?

The moon shattered at some point; this is evident. Historical legends refer to a single moon; a large rock in the sky. Now, only small fragments of a larger orb twinkle and rotate around the world. The five shards are known by many cultural names, typically relating them to historical figures.
Moon phases are measured by how many segments are visible, and how many are obscured by darkness. The rotation of the moon shards also allows for these segments to be used to measure time; as they twinkle in consistent timing. Counting the time between any single shard's light-dark period will give you a period of time about equal to 3 seconds.
