Grandmaster of the Royal Order
The Grandmaster is the right hand of the King in regards to hunting out remnants of the Sorceress' influence and works. The first Grandmaster, 'Iyohek', was appointed to the rank as a close confidant of the King at the time and regarded as an able and astute judge of character. Following his passing, each successive Grandmaster rises to the rank through a combination of deed, relentless character and history assessment, personal determination by the reigning Monarch and finally confirmation by the Prophet's Heirs (both the Royal line and the Prophet's own descendants). The Grandmaster most typically runs the Order from its main headquarters in the Capital, but he may leave to pursue investigations or operations of his own accord.
To be Grandmaster of the Royal Order of the Serpent is to be the most powerful man or woman in the Kingdom below the Monarch. As part of ones duties, the Grandmaster may investigate and arrest essentially anyone so long as there is proof or suspicion of the Sorceress' influence upon said individual. As Grandmaster, he can roam the country at will in support of the Order's agents and directly oversee any Order operation of his choosing. But while his authority is near endless, the burden upon him is massive. It is he, the Grandmaster alone, who must ultimately lead the charge to root out the Sorceress and her works. He can only call upon the Monarch's aid and no other. As such, the Grandmaster must take every precaution that can be done. After all, the influence of the Sorceress was enough to bring low the Hursan Empire towards the end of the Hursan Wars. It is the goal of the Order, and the Grandmaster, to ensure that such an occurrence never happens again either in the Kingdom or the neighboring nations.
The ascension of a new Grandmaster is typically a grand occurrence in the royal capital and one of great celebration in the Kingdom as a whole, such is the prestige of the Order.
