Otobre
The otobre are a peaceful race dwelling in the great forest of Tam'lann. Isolated from the rest of the world, they have barely advanced past the stone age but enjoy fulfilling lives protected from the strife of the outside.
The otobre believe that all life in the world sprang forth from the womb of one maternal entity, Tamaran the Heavenly Beast. There was a time in which the Heavenly Beast walked the land as her children did and guided them with all the love a mother could give. This period came to a close when group of her children, whose name was lost to history, rebelled against her and, while she ultimately emerged victorious, the Heavenly Beast was shattered, her being torn apart and scattered into the 8 aspects of the forest:
Storm; the rage of Tamaran who brings wrath to those that would harm her children.
Water; the tolerance of Tamaran who shows how best to adapt and change with ones circumstance in life.
Stone; the authority of Tamaran who keeps her children resolute in their devotion.
Tree; the tenderness of Tamaran who provides for all the creatures of the forest.
Fungus; the optimism of Tamaran who works to bring joy to even the worst situations.
Rodent; the mischief of Tamaran who enjoys playing tricks on others and ensuring no one creature gets too full of itself.
Bird; the vigilance of Tamaran who guards the creatures of the forest from they who may yet threaten it.
And finally Maggot; the melancholy of Tamaran who ensures her beloved children find peace in death.
It was under the care of these aspects that the otobre have lived for thousands of years.
The otobre’s society has no name, being so isolated that it has nothing from which to distinguish itself. The handful of otobre that do venture beyond the forest, a place whose existence is doubted by many, refer to their homeland simply as ‘Home’. They that wish to travel to or from the otobre’s home, deep in the forest, will need to traverse a landscape filled to the brim with the most dangerous beasts and plants in the known world and foreigners seeking to get in must face the wrath of Bird, the ever watchful guardian intent on keeping them away.
The otobre are divided into 5 castes based on their subrace:
the Kumi; who labour under the orders of the other castes, working tirelessly to create a better tomorrow,
the Nekki; who are the gatherers of the society, climbing into the gargantuan trees of the forest for their bountiful fruits and birds eggs,
the Erki; who are the hunters, sending out packs to track down and bring back great beasts,
the Omi; who enforce the law of the land and are responsible for bringing justice to they that break it,
and highest of all are the Kixi; who form the priestly ruling class and their guards.
The society of the otobre is a matriarchy in which the position of the mother is regarded as sacred and closest to the Heavenly Beast herself. As such the females of every caste are given greater importance than the males. The highest rank Kixi otobre can reach is the pontifex, the absolute ruler of the land and the chief interpreter of the Heavenly Beasts will whereas the highest rank a Kixi otobro can reach is the pontifex’s bodyguard.
Among the otobre there are sometimes those who wish to shed their role in society and live under the aspects directly, typically following the death of her or his spouse. Wilders, as they are known, live a less comfy life, with no roof overhead but the canopy and no food but that one can gather. Should one gain the favour of the aspects in this way they shall receive a blessing based on their sex; an otobre goes on to become a channeler of great primal magic and an otobro becomes a mighty warrior that wields the power of the aspects themselves.
