Food for thought

Based around the adult oblex, page 218 of mordenkainen's tome of foes   These jelly like creatures crave memories and target high intelligence creatures. The party hear from the library that some scholars have disappeared when making their way home from night shifts, and the adventurers are warned that they make be at risk. Then, on the way back, the adventurer sees the person that was described as missing sitting on a bench in a park, and another leaning against a wall in an alleyway reading a book. After a few days of this, or if the adventurers attempt to talk to the creature, the person will talk and act as if they were their previous self, as the oblex knows their whole story and identity. The only difference is that on perception 12 the oblex smells somewhat of sulfur (rotten egg). On insight 17 the party can tell that the creature is under no duress and is in no clear pain and is not afraid, but may seem to be stalling. A might could occur in a park or down an alleyway. If the fight goes poorly then the oblex will bargain for information by offering knowledge about a different quest and promise to move on elsewhere. Upon being killed all simulators will dissolve into jelly and die out.   CR 5    Weak to fire This can be discovered by research or by word of mouth saying that some strange people have been wandering at night without torches.     The source of the oblex is a mind flaying hiding in the kingdom of the dhampir and staying at an abandoned location
