Beacon of Deliya

A magical assisstive device meant to calm the bearer with a slow, rhythm of illusory light simulating the rhythm of natural breathing. This item does not control the emotions of the mortal holding it, it merely provides a visual cue that aids in meditation and other calming exercises.

What Does It Do?

A Beacon of Deliya does not control the emotions of the mortal holding it, it merely provides a visual cue that aids in meditation and other calming exercises.   When the enchanted vessel is held by a sentient being, motes of illusory light begin to appear around the person. After several seconds (the length of which is determined at the beacon's creation), the vessel appears to slowly absorb the motes of light and hold them within for several more seconds. Then, the vessel appears to slowly release those particles of light for several seconds until it is empty again. This process repeats indefinitely until the vessel is no longer being held.

How Is it Made?

They can be constructed from any number of translucent vessels: an orb, bottle, lantern, etc. Some are designed to be held in one hand in much the same way as a fidget object, while others are meant to be cradled in both hands as the sole focus of meditation. The only requirement for the beacon is that the interior of the enchanted vessel must be visible.   Variations of this design can include a timed illusion that need only be activated by touch, but does not need to be held in order to maintain the illusion.   Uses for a Beacon Beacons are a very common magic item and their production is often subsidized in major metropolitan areas as a public service. The process to create a Beacon of Deliya is widely known. The tools and rituals required to design and produce these objects are freely shared amongst magical craftsmen.   The illusory loop of light particles produced by the Beacon of Deliya is meant as a guide for controlled, meditative breathing exercises. It is commonly used as an assistive device for those who are just learning meditation or who require an external guide in order to overcome anxiety or stress.   Traditionally, the user is meant to inhale as the vessel is absorbing the motes of light, as if they were breathing in the magical energy into their own lungs, then exhale as the vessel is releasing the motes of light, as if they were releasing tension and negative energy from their own body. Beacons of Deliya as most often used as a visualization for this meditative breathing metaphor.

Etymology

The magic of this item is reference to Deliya, a goddess of light and life, who is attributed with providing guidance and the knowledge of healing magic to mortals. It is said that breathing in rhythm with the lights produced will allow one to breathe along with the goddess herself, and those of faith believe that it represents the literal breathing of Deliya and that she is always watching over those who seek peace within and light in darkness.

Author's Notes

This item is inspired by the visualization I commonly use when meditating through my own anxiety attacks. It's been so helpful to me, as a very visual person who loves magic and D&D. I hope that you find value having the Beacon of Deliya in your own games, and maybe find value in it for your own mental health journeys!

And Lavani's Review: "I sat contemplating the light- hidden, by its embrace, from the intruding world. I recommend you get one of these beacons." ~Lavani

This is such a beautiful concept. I have something along these lines in my own world, but of course based on my experiences as a physical/tactile person. Sadly, a purely visual beacon wouldn't do me much good. Can beacons be made that use other senses besides sight? Someone who is blind could benefit from one that hums in rising and falling pitch or volume. For myself, I would love something that slowly expands and contracts in my hands.

that is a wonderful idea! Deliya is a god of healing, so of course her followers would consider more accessible options as well! thank you for the suggestion!
