Prince Charles Thronekeep was born into the royal family of the Kingdom of Galowith. He was second-in-line for the throne, so his older brother, Remus became King instead. However, Charles is not really bothered by this, as he doesn't want to be King.
In fact, according to Galowith's laws, when the King's eldest son reaches maturity, he becomes first in line for the throne, even if the King has an eligible brother. On the day that Charles's nephew, Cedric, reached maturity, Charles threw an extravagant party. Many onlookers seemed to think Charles was celebrating not having to become King, rather than Prince Cedric's adulthood.
Although Charles doesn't want the responsibilities of the throne, he is far from a freeloader. He has many responsibilities related to castle security, and he even was in the army during the Galowith-Azican War.
Education
After returning from the war, Charles attended the Arcane University of Galowith. He became an accomplished scholar, and even published papers explaining modifications to the fireball spell.

Family Ties
Charles is the younger brother of King Remus Thronekeep, who is married to Queen Elspeth. He has two nephews and an illegitimate niece. Though the niece is his favorite.
He never married or had any children himself.
