Bissel: Summary
A march is a border territory between larger powers and The March of Bissel, or the "Littlemark" has fit this description for ages past and present. Veluna, the Gran March, Ket and the Duchy of Geoff have all had a hand in Bissel's history. Foremost Bissel is a conduit between West and East in the Flanaess. The West hold the Baklunish peoples of Ket and other states, and, through the Bramblewood Pass, the Baklunish and others have entered the Flanaess proper. From a modern world perspective the Baklunish people might be seen as Middle Eastern or West Asian in culture. East of the Bramblewood pass is the Sheldomar Valley, a breadbasket of the Flanaess, bordered on the west by the Barrier Peaks and Crystalmist Mountains and on the east by the Lortmil Mountatins. Two great rivers, the Javan and Sheldomar drain this fertile land. Many hills, fens, and marshes are found near these waterways. Great forests including the Bramblewood and Dim Forest are also part of Bissel.
Bissel was a pawn in the Greyhawk wars of the last few years. While the great powers were distracted by Iuz in the east, Ket attacked Bissel, destroying many of the border keeps and decimating the border companies. Only with the truce brokered in Greyhawk in 584 CY, did a peace of sorts return. Thornward, former capital of Bissel and busy trading centre is now governed by four separate powers. Still, there is some unease along the western borders while the keeps and forts of the Knights of the Watch are being rebuilt. The Knights of the Watch themselves are looking for recruits to fill their ranks, laid low as they were by Kettish forces during the war. Further south, the Duchy of Geoff is still controlled by giants and their kin who invaded from the Crystalmists. So while life has returned to normal, somewhat, in Bissel there is still much danger, adventure, and riches to be had. And you are from this land whether you are a human, dwarf, gnome, halfling, elf or half-elf. You have known Bissel's struggles throughout your life. Perhaps you are a ranger who faught with a border company in the wars; or a dwarf who has worked the mines of the Barrier Peaks; an elf of the Dim Forest come to make your name in the world outside your leafy home, or a gnome from the Lorridges who wants to try their inventions in the world of the big people. There are even barbarians in the Barony of the Horsehills who might venture beyond their borders. The world is yours.
