Cideci Settlement in The Last Line | World Anvil

Cideci

"Father tells me that Cideci was a city of gold and silver, surrounded by misty clouds and full of joy and merriment."
"How come no-one's found it yet?"
"Well, he thinks that's because we're looking too far south. We would never build it so close to the end of the world!"
— Two halflings discuss their ancestral homeland
Cideci was a large city built in the Finuhit Ocean, rising some kilometres away from the World's Edge. Destroyed a millenia ago, its exact position relative to the other cities of the ocean is not known, and no remains of it have ever been found.

History

Pre-Collapse

Due to an apparent loss of all written records predating the year 2000, not much is known about Cideci's pre-collapse history. It is known to have been further east than the city of Stadeben, though how far isn't known with certainty. It was populated primarily by halflings, with notable tengu and goblin groups also calling the city home.   Prior to its destruction, there was a slow and persistent exodus of residents from Cideci to Stadeben, which was the nearest city.

Collapse

The last of the Cidecians to leave the city and arrive in Stadeben did so around the year 2100, though stragglers may have arrived for months or years afterwards. With the last arrivals came a formal transfer of power, as the city's government acknowledged the loss of their territory and requested 'asylum' within Stadeben, which was granted.   All reference to the city's actual collapse in the records of either city's government refers to it only as an 'inevitable tragedy', implied to be a destruction by natural disaster that caused irreparable damage to the city's supports. The lack of records in this regard is attributed to a fire which burnt down the Cidecian government's embassy in Stadeben in the year 3823.

Current State

As no record is known to have existed of when the city "actually" fell, its status is a complete unknown. Many descendants of the Cidecian survivors believe it may still exist far to the east, further than ever previously believed, but no evidence of the city has been found to date. Others suggest that if it did not 'collapse' in the 2100s, it has likely already fallen over the edge of the world, like other cities.

Destruction

Many speculate over what exactly caused the city's inevitable collapse. A common theory is that a calamitous earthquake damaged the supports beyond repair, leading to their gradual failure over the course of many years.   Others still propose a more immediate but no less foreseeable disaster - that of one of the many islands that drift on the Current colliding with the city and bringing it over the World's Edge. Given how fast the islands move in comparison to the stable cities, the city would be long gone so many years later, explaining the lack of discoveries in the centuries since.
