Goron

Supposedly a creation of Din, Gorons are powerful creatures who live near volcanoes and other high-heat or mountainous areas. They are naturally resistant to fire and consume rocks for sustenance. They appear to be a monogendered species and reproduce asexually. As far as anyone knows.   Gorons are tall, massive, and incredibly strong... yet they are most commonly pacifists who avoid combat whenever possible. Champions from Goron communities primarily train to fight monsters and other creatures that cannot be reasoned with, but those champions are a force to be reckoned with when fully unleashed. They are typically good creatures with pure hearts and boundless enthusiasm.

Player Information

  • Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.
  • Age. Gorons reach maturity by fifteen years old and can live up to eighty years.
  • Size. Goron adults stand 5 to 6 feet tall and average 450 pounds. Your size is Medium.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. You are incapable of swimming and sink immediately.
  • Stone Blows - Your body is a natural weapon in which you have proficiency, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier. At 10th level, you develop spikes that deal piercing damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier.
  • Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
  • Rock Armor. Due to your rock body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your body provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn't affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as normal.
  • Heat Adaptation. You are resistant to fire damage, but are vulnerable to cold damage.
  • Boulder Roll. You can roll into a ball as an action. Until you emerge, physical attacks made against you are at disadvantage and you have advantage on Strength and Constitution saving throws. While shaped like a boulder, movement is doubled and you can only attack with Stone Blows. Standing up again counts as a bonus action.
  • Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Goron.

Civilization and Culture

The Goron are an ancient species from the early days of the world. They build settlements high up in the mountains, inside volcanoes, next to lava lakes, and similar environmental locations. Much like dwarves, they are natural excavators of the land and can build impressive structures within stone. Unlike dwarves, however, Gorons are not subterranean creatures and do not have the ability to see in dim light. Their cities always have access to sunlight and fresh air. They see themselves as an extension of the mountain above.    Their settlements are almost always built next to the searing heat of lava, which provides them with a natural defense against conquering nations and bandit raids. Few creatures have the ability to withstand the heat of Goron villages without wearing additional protection -- the main exception being tieflings.    Gorons eat rocks for food, especially preferring basalt. A true delicacy is rock that has been recently charred and partially melted by lava! Spicy! A natural byproduct of harvesting rock for sustenance is that sometimes the Goron can gradually shave off the elevations of minor mountains (provided lava does not replenish stone in time with their consumption).   Other, more profitable byproduct of eating rocks? Gemstones. They are not tasty, and serve little purpose to the Goron, and so they regularly sell gemstones to other species. Gemstones and precious metals represent the bulk of the Gorons trade with other civilizations. Goron traders often walk huge distances to the main settlements of Verden to trade goods, as they are too big and heavy to use horses or other means of transportation.    These traders are frequently protected by Goron champions -- warriors who have trained in a variety of ways to protect their kin from harm. Sometimes champions will seek employment from other societies as mercenaries and bodyguards, interested in seeing the world and experiencing new things (and new tasty rocks). It is extremely rare, however, that the Goron engage in war between civilizations. They primarily fight monsters and inherently evil creatures like demons from beyond the Material Plane. Most Gorons are big softies inside.
