Lanasach
Lanasach is a nation located in the southeast corner of the Lalvican Sea, next to the open Innagos Desert.
Due to the extreme heat of the desert climate, Lanasach has never been quite as populated as the other nations of Verden. Civilization here has great respect for the dangerous local environment -- the land does not yield to them, and so they build their society around the worst hazards. They have modest maritime and overland trade with the Interior nations, braving the perils of both Lalvican piracy and caravan raiders.
Lanasach used to be a more assertive force on the world stage, but their traditional head of state was deposed by Olimandias after a brief and ruthless war. Lanasach is now ruled by a local provincial "governor," Satrap Amaya Navaris.
While no longer strictly adhered to, Lanasach was traditionally a matriarchal society.
Structure
Once ruled by a monarch, Olimandias nullified this position in the social hierarchy. Authority shifted to the most powerful satrap (provincial governor) in the nation. This promotes internal competition between satraps -- a tactic employed by Olimandias to keep Lanasach too "busy" to rebel. Because provincial power shifts over time, this means that Lanasach is ruled by rotating noble houses rather than a single royal family.
Lanasach's national leader has only limited power, primarily focusing on foreign diplomacy, military operations, and maintaining order among the other satraps. Other satraps maintain a relatively high level of autonomy within their own subdivisions of Lanasach. Being elevated to national leader is more an individual honor than a noble house promotion.
All personal and legal disputes in Lanasach are resolved through the Matriarch's Council, a supreme court of law with uniform authority throughout the nation.
Culture
Traditionally matriarchal, Lanasach is slowly becoming more egalitarian. Men and women are equally free to become satrap and hold positions of authority, but the judicial branch of government is still strictly led by women.
Due to daytime heat, Lanasach is effectively a nocturnal society. People sleep through the heat of the day and then emerge at night to socialize and work. Most buildings are designed with natural heat sinks in their architecture to passively lower interior temperatures. Aqueducts stretch between the mountain rivers and settlements, providing fresh, cool water to residents. Irrigation canals also cut through much of the area to provide water to hardy crops. Traveling by water taxi is often faster than traveling by foot.
Unlike other nations, Lanasach is fairly secular and requires all mages to register with the government so that their power can be regulated. They have a robust education system and many institutes of higher learning. With lackluster trade, Lanasach attempts to remain self-sustainable and produces many of their own goods. Lack of resources keeps their population fairly low.
