Roslen

This kingdom dominates the northeastern quadrant of the Interior region. Roslen is most famous for its rich artistic history and gallant cavaliers. The continent's largest opera house can be found here, along with innumerable theaters, high-end restaurants, and luxury retailers. The ancient noble houses of Roslen compete for social supremacy. Every wealthy gala is a verbal battleground where careers can be ruined with a cutting exchange of words.   The temples and palaces of Roslen are extravagant works of gothic architecture.   Though neighboring Muldinach is home to the land's most advanced military technology, Roslen has the largest Interior army in terms of manpower.   Roslen is currently ruled by Queen Theodora Voisard.

Structure

Roslen's royal family -- House Voisard -- has ruled the area for seven centuries. Political power was stripped from the royal family over time, and Roslen's parliament officially handles most aspects of governance. In the last twenty years, however, the reigning Queen Theodora has consolidated a new kind of power: social influence. The royal palace hosts the biggest and more important social events of the year, and it is often said that the Queen Knows All. Through intrigue and charm, Theodora can devastate or elevate noble houses and bend them to her will.   Beyond this, Roslen's wealthiest merchants and entertainment proprietors have considerable sway over the members of Roslen's parliament. There are clear class divisions in Roslen. Nobility controls most aspects of government, wealthy merchants and gentry have some influence over the nobles, and common serfs have almost no political power whatsoever.

Assets

In Roslen, you are most likely to find:
  • Entertainment venues, affluent hotels, spas, salons, luxury good dealers, high-end jewelers, and restaurants.
  • The most renowned artists, bards, and actors.
  • A large standing army known most for their noble cavaliers.
  • Bard colleges.
  • Insufferable nobles and a whole bunch of farmers who are probably ready to revolt over urban extravagance.

History

Antiquity

A temperate climate and rich farmlands allowed Roslen to accumulate the Interior's largest population, and thus the most specialized careers. Roslen's many craftsmen make rare goods and luxury products that sell for high prices across the entire continent -- from expensive cheeses, to wines, to diamond necklaces. They have a rich tradition of theater and music. The noble houses of Roslen have been in continuous power since the bronze age, with historians tracing back the family lines to some of the earliest known landowners.   Roslen's largest city, Glenien, was founded roughly 3000 years ago in the era of peace that followed Hylia banishing Demise from the world. Originally a hillfort protected by a simple palisade wall, it has since grown into one of the largest cities on the continent.

The Voisard Dynasty

For most of its history, Roslen was an independent kingdom. Numerous royal dynasties rose and fell over time. The current dynasty, House Voisard, came into power during the divine war between Lazu and Diel over 700 years ago. During this era, Lazu's followers placed Glenien under siege for nearly a decade. The city's residents constructed an elaborate catacomb and tunnel system beneath the the city to move freely during times of conflict and bury fallen knights. The monarchy rapidly cycled between several houses, leadership completely unsustainable as sovereigns were assassinated or removed from power by jealous rivals.   A wave of human immigrants from the south had arrived just prior to the war, shaking up the Hylian and High Elf culture that had dominated Roslen in years prior. Among them was a warrior named Amani Voisard, who made a name for himself on the battlefield by cutting down countless enemy troops using a finely crafted greatsword. He became so popular with the commonfolk that even the nobles had to yield to his authority. He became King Amani Voisard, the founding member of a new human dynasty -- something the elven nobles were made uncomfortable by. A tension that continues to exist into the modern era.

Roslen Loses Independence

King Amani was the man who saved Roslen during the divine war. And he was the man who lost Roslen's independence shortly thereafter. With one war complete, Olimandias threatened another immediately. Diel's followers had grown increasingly zealous during the war and now envisioned a world union... unfortunately, they were willing to use force to acquire it. Rather than drag his people into another potentially deadly war, King Amani willingly formed an alliance with Olimandias and agreed to follow their laws.   This soft annexation of Roslen is considered the formation of the Olimandias Hegemony -- and marks Year 0 on the modern calendar.

Modern Day

Currently, most nobles are now pampered layabouts who do no actual work, but competitively socialize to gain the monarch's favor and strut about like children putting on a play of what they think gallant knights should be like. But while noble heirs are expected to lead troops into battle and lead by example, most have no actual war experience. As such, they all have very fancy armor without a single scratch on it.   The nation is ruled by Theodora Voisard, the direct descendant of King Amani, though much of the monarch's power has since been taken away.   Theodora has so far committed to neutrality in the growing conflict between the Hegemony and the domains, though political pressure may force her to take a stand.

Demography and Population

Roslen is home to every race, but due to the social power of land ownership and long-term wealth accumulation, elves tend to dominate the upper tiers of society, as they have far more time to accumulate power as individuals.

Military

Roslen boasts the largest military in the Interior when it comes to manpower, but much of their equipment is antiquated -- and romanticized due to the popularity of ballads and stage plays involving chivalrous knights. The bulk of their army is conscripted peasants rapidly trained to function as pikemen, and the nobles who are supposed to make up Roslen's leadership and heavy cavalry are largely inexperienced. But their clothes are fantastic.
