Taj-Nar Mountains
The Taj-Nar Mountains are located in the southern half of Verden. They run east-west along the full width of the continent, which makes them the longest mountain range in the land. They divide the center of Verden from Calatia and Koridai, two sparsely populated regions to the south.
Because the range covers such a wide area, the Taj-Nar Mountains are home to diverse climates and sub-regions.
Western Range: Titans of Fire and Ice
The largest peaks in the Taj-Nar mountains can be found on the western end of the range, near Vanadiel and Uradiel. Many of these mountains, especially in the northern section of this region, are active stratovolcanoes that erupt on a semi-frequent basis. The southern edge of the range is populated by dormant volcanoes that have had no major eruptions in modern history. Travelers in this area are greeted to one of the most stunning sights in Verden: two giant mountains of dueling natures and appearances. Death Mountain is a massive, active volcano on the northern edge of the range. It is constantly billowing steam and has a minor eruption at least once a year. Its rock is very dark, appearing almost black from a distance, and lingering lava flows glow bright orange-red -- creating an especially menacing visual at night. It is a very hazardous area, rife with rocks being tossed up from eruptions and monsters drawn to the intense heat. Behind it, seemingly staring over its shoulder, is Snowpeak. It is equally massive, but covered in snow and thick glaciers. Snowpeak lies around 100 miles to the south and is regarded as the starting point of the Calatia region. Again in contrast to Death Mountain, Snowpeak has lain dormant for over a thousand years. Its frozen landscape is also extremely hazardous, and many travelers have met their end here after underestimating the conditions. Fronts that pass through the area often cause massive amounts of snow to fall on Snowpeak's region, then soon transition to thunderstorms as they meet the friction of volcanic plumes and the intense heat of Death Mountain.Underdark: The Labyrinth
Beneath the western cluster of mountain is a vast, complex network of natural tunnels and lava tubes. They (partially) form The Labyrinth. It is a sprawling underground structure that cuts into the Underdark. These tunnels extend out in a great web into the surrounding area -- even close to Olimandias itself, if rumors are to be believed. They are extremely dangerous. Unexpected lava flows, cave-ins, pitfalls, and all manner of horrifying monsters and demons lurk here. (To be continued in its own article.)Central Range
Around the border of Uradiel and the Innagos Desert, the mountains in the range gradually begin to lower in maximum height. Near the Uradiel plains, these jagged mountains are covered in pine trees and other hardy flora. The average temperature in the plains below hover around 80-90 degrees. Temperature shifts as wind comes over the mountains result in considerable generation of condensation and water vapor. These central mountains are the source of the River Maisha -- a massive river system which flows south into Calatia. Hunting is quite good in these regions, as there are plenty of deer, antelope, and other ungulates who capitalize on open plains below.Eastern Range
From the heart of the Innagos Desert and eastward -- thus making up the majority of the range -- the Taj-Nar Mountains are rather humble in size and appearance. Wind erosion has done a number on the older peaks here, and volcanic activity is not quite as robust. The air is dry, the temperature regularly jumps to above 100 in the sandy desert below, and few plants and animals are tough enough to withstand the environment. Old meandering rivers have dug out extensive canyons. The canyons and the mountains provide much needed shelter for humanoids and creatures alike. The few rivers in the area provide vital drinking water for the handful of settlements that have withstood the test of time. There is a notable wide pass in the Taj-Nar Mountains near the border of Lanasach that can provide an indirect route into the Koridian Plains.
