Twili

The Twili people have a mysterious origin linked to both Hylians and the Gerudo.   They are native to the Twilight Realm (alternatively called "the Shadowfell" by arcane cosmologists), and only rarely travel to the material plane. The Twilight Realm is largely dominated by roving monsters and independent entities of terror, so the Twili establishing a true civilization there is an unprecedented feat of strength and ingenuity.   The Twili have powers innately tied to their home plane, able to slip between worlds and see remarkably well in dark environments. Conversely, they are sensitive to sunlight on the Material Plane and must take precautions when adventuring during the day.   They are humanoids with traits that resemble both Hylian and Gerudo physiology, though some Twili can appear far more supernatural in their facial and body structures. They typically have bright orange hair, red-and-yellow eyes, and deathly pale skin that can occasionally appear shades of light blue or green. They typically wear black attire and frequently have ritual tattoos representing their bloodline origins.

Civilization and Culture

The Twili were born from a dark moment in history.   Once upon a time, the Demon King Demise was nearly successful in his attempts to invade and conquer the world. A few splinter Gerudo tribes had pledged their loyalty to Demise and allied themselves with the Interlopers -- a league of cruel sorcerers and wizards from central Verden. Their combined efforts nearly allowed Demise to be summoned into the world, but followers of the Golden Goddesses were able to defeat them and end the crisis. The Interlopers and the rogue Gerudo then faced trial at the Arbiter's Grounds in modern day Koridai, and they were subsequently banished to the Twilight Realm for their crimes.   It was a harrowing experience at the outset. Many exiles succumbed to the hostile environment within the first few days. The next two years saw them establish a settlement and fight desperately to protect it from the creatures of the Twilight Realm. This would become known as the Umbral Citadel, their great city-state, at the center of which stood the Palace of Twilight.   Over time, bloodlines mixed and the Twili adapted to their new environment. The famous red hair of the Gerudo shifted to become bright orange -- inherited from Demise himself. Their skin became ghostly pale and they were better able to see in the shadows. Their philosophies also adapted. While some Twili rulers favored vengeance against the people of Verden, having to work together to survive had instilled a sense of cooperation in many others. Increasingly, the Twili favor remaining in the Twilight Realm to live as they see fit, seeking no violence with the descendants of their ancient enemies. Newer rulers even seek to rebuild friendships in Verden.   The Twili have turned away from their malicious origins to become a stable and peaceful civilization.   Twili rarely leave their realm, but individuals may be sent to the material plane to scout, recover materials, or undertake an important mission. While powerful Twili are capable of shifting between planes, most will enter the world near the Arbiter's Grounds in Koridai -- the place of their initial exile.   They have semi-friendly (if infrequent) contact with the Zantari and Midanis tribes of the Gerudo, for they share common ancestors.
