Focus

Wands and staves are part of the stereotype about our profession - and indeed, most magi will carry one or the other, if only because having a stout length of wood on you at all times is often surprisingly useful. But it's rarer that these items are necessary for more complex casting. No, for that...you will want a Focus.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

A Focus acts as a kind of mental crux for the caster's power. Most are enchanted in some way, making it easier for the caster to amplify their natural magical ability and lessening the chance of a catastrophic loss of control.

Manufacturing process

The item chosen is generally inlaid with at least one type of precious stone. The size of the gem is not important, and is usually chosen to fit the item's size aesthetically.   Simpler foci of the past made do with crude sigils carved into them by hand. Modern foci are usually etched magically to ensure accuracy.

Significance

Allows easier focusing of magic. Whilst incantations can be attempted without one, the difficulty containing the power will be significantly increased, and the consequences for failure far more dire.
Item type
Magical
Rarity
Carried by almost all serious magi.
Raw materials & Components
Any item can become a Focus - It is usually considered good practice to choose an item that already has great significance to the caster in question.   Other magically conductive components such as gems, silver or gold are often used in the construction.
