Spells

A spell is any well-known arcane effect that can be learned by rote. Many simple spells have become a normal part of everyday life.
Spells are usually employed by nobility without deeper arcane training, or by a mage not wishing to put forth more effort than is strictly necessary. Their effects are fixed and immutable, but what they lack in versatility they make up for in simplicity. Many of the most common spells have been refined to such a degree that the actual working knowledge of the arcane required to safely use them, and the resultant strain on the caster's psyche, is very low indeed.
On occasion, nobles with an academic bent have thought themselves equal to full-fledged mages on account of having learned a number of useful (and sometimes powerful) spells. Those that have attempted to press the issue in a duel or similar combat scenario have been swiftly and humiliatingly reminded of the value of versatility.
