Magic permeates the entire world of Dulūn. It is accessible to mortals through the Weave, metaphysical threads connecting the material plane to the astral sea. All magic, performed by anyone or anything, is connected to the astral sea, usually accessed through this Weave.

Cost

Casting spells depletes magical stamina in a person, commonly referred to as their Arcana. More powerful spells require more use of Arcana, while lesser ones require little to even sometimes none. When a person no longer has any Arcana, any spells that they attempt to cast will fizzle out until they are able to rest and regain their reserves.

Practitioners

There are many different types of people who practice magic. It is accessible to some degree to nearly everyone on the planet. However, in order to obtain higher levels of strength in magic, one must have power that comes from one of three sources: connection to the weave, connection to the planes, or connection to the land. The types of magic that are strongest for each of these sources of magic can vary greatly.

Connection to the Weave

Through careful study of the inner workings of the Weave, one can learn to manipulate it to their own will, affecting the very threads of reality. Mages and runesmiths do just this, dedicating years of study to specialised fields. Through their connection to the Weave, people of these professions often become capable of great feats of magic, their names written in history books for years to come.

Connection to the Planes

Through forming a connection to a creature from the other planes of existence, a mortal can channel magic through a patron. This often comes with stipulations, but this depends on the exact patron. The most common profession that channels magic through an extraplanar being is an Acolyte, drawing power from their deity. For those that make pacts with other planar patrons, they may instead become a Warlock.

Connection to the Land

Professions such as that of the guardian or witch gain their power through the land itself. The original, and most primordial, form of magic, this allows them to listen to the world around them, altering either it or themselves.
They can use such power to shape the very land itself, guide nature, or even become a part of it themselves.

Types of Magic

There are nine types of magic that are widely used across the planet. These types can be described as colours, or as their scope. The order in which these magic types were discovered and began to be researched also correlates to the emergence of the language terms for these colours in the world's languages. As such, many of the terms for black and white are very similar across languages, while words for orange or purple are more varied.

Nature (Black) Magic

Nature magic was the first type of magic to exist, and is represented by the colour black. Originally, the scope of nature magic was anything that did not correlate to the gods - it was a necessity, used to collect food, protect oneself, and find shelter. Nowadays, nature magic is pretty much synonumous with plants and animals.

Divine (White) Magic

Divine magic is magic that is sourced from otherwordly beings, generally the gods. It is generally protective or communicative in nature, allowing for a closer connection to one's god(s).

Blood (Red) Magic

Blood magic has to do with the body. It was developed as a need for a method of healing arose, but later applications have made it possible to use for direct harm as well. It was the third type of magic to develop, after white and black.

Enhancement (Green) Magic

Green magic, also known as enhancement magic, arose shortly after blood magic. It was a sort of extention and separation of some of the concepts of red magic, focused on pushing the limits of one's own body - originally for survival.

True (Gold) Magic

After the rise of green magic, with conflicts becoming more prominent, casters with higher access to magic had a huge advantage in the fighting. To counter this, true magic was developed - magic that affected other magic.

Utility (Blue) Magic

As the foundational forms of magic had been laid, society began to try to use magic not for the purpose of survival, but instead for lesiure. Thus, blue magic was developed. This covered anything from enchanting a tree to give more shade, to harnessing the connections of the Astral Plane to move between two different points in an instance.

Death (Brown) Magic

Soon after the advancement of magic being used for things that weren't strictly necessary, brown magic was formed. This was magic having to do with death, decay, souls, and the afterlife.

Free (Purple) Magic

The second-to-last magic that emerged was free magic. Free magic has to do with minds, rather than tangible things. This encompasses both illusions and mind-altering magic. It was with the development of purple magic that the Cobalt Sun was formed, as this type of magic introduced many ethical concerns.

Elemental (Orange) Magic

Orange magic is the most recent magic, its initial research spearheaded by Dr. Cain Temple. It is magic harnessing the power of the elemental planes, which restricts the scope of what can be done but also comes with a large boost in potency.
