Vocivicite is a highly unstable magical crystal that grows near rifts on the material plane. It grows in clusters underground, the size of the growth dependent on the strength and instability of the rift they are growing near. These crystals store the planar energy of the rift, and their growth can make nearby rifts more stable, as the excess energy generated by the rifts gets stored in these crystals.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Vocivicite can be almost any colour, though tends to be on the more vibrant side. The colour of the crystal directly corresponds to the amount of planar energy held within, with blue being its least powerful colour, and gold being its most. The crystals also emit a bright glow, lighting the areas around them to almost the same level as true daylight. The crystals are incredibly brittle, and can easily break into smaller shards. However, the size of a vocivicite shard does not correlate to the amount of planar energy it holds; when a shard is broken, the percentage of planar energy it takes from the crystal it was broken from seems to be entirely random.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Vocivicite channels planar energy, a property which in and of itself has a lot of implications in its use. Planar energy is one of the most potent types of energy, and when unleashed from these crystals, can cause immediate and extreme changes in the environment. The plane from which the rift that each crystal grew from will affect how the specific crystal changes the environment around it, and other aspects of the rift affect the duration of these changes. A crystal grown from a weak connection to the shadowfell might cast a cloud-like shadow over the area where its energy is released for a short amount of time. However, a crystal grown around an unstable rift directly into the abyss might kill all plant life within a large area around it for a few weeks or months.
Life & Expiration
Due to the instability of vocivicite, it cannot hold its energy for very long. If it remains in the area where it forms, it will eventually begin to leak excess planar energy into the area around it, often causing more crystals to grow around it. However, if a crystal has been removed, this energy is unable to ground itself to the rift the crystal grew from, and the planar energy will begin to affect the area around it. If worn on a person, that person will begin to display traits connected to the plane to which the crystal's rift connected. If kept in a location, that location may begin to morph to appear more like that plane. While changes caused by a crystal's energy being released all at once are seldom permanent, this process involves smaller exposure to the crystal's planar energy, over a longer period of time, which is more likely to be permanent.
Ooo, fun. I feel sorry for those poor novices though.
