10 - 9/1/21 : Dreamline
In-game date: 6th-7th of Freymond, 3521
“All the hands of destiny point towards you and your friends, whether you desire this or not. We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. Watch for that moment... and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap.” - The Exile
As the sun rose on the 6th of Freymond, the occupants of Troll Skull Manor slowly woke from their busy night at Ulbrinter Villa, hoping for a slow day to make up for the turbulence of those that came before. Reilly was the first to make her way down, where she was spoken to by Lif the ghostly bartender. Lif informed her that in anticipation for the tavern’s opening, he had the Rat Catchers put out fliers to seek applicants to fill the rest of the staff the tavern would require. With the candidates scheduled to arrive just after noon, the party had plenty of time to see to their own tasks in the meantime.
Yilani made her way down soon after, looking disheveled and tired. She picked a corner to sulk in, visibly upset about something. Megumi left soon after to take her cart out to the markets and run her magic shop for the day, while Brooke went to find a hangover cure and Lacky departed to find a run-down tavern to pass the time away at.
As the party left the tavern mostly empty, Yilani remained behind to sulk. Lif approached her and offered to act the part of a bartender in the way of lending advice and a willing ear. Yilani asked if her duty or her friends are more important; Lif responded with a metaphor, stating that owning and running a tavern is nothing without the people that give the business life and a reason to exist.
Meanwhile, Brooke made his way to Fala's shop to seek a hangover cure. Fala offered him either a casting of lesser restoration for a quick but slightly painful cure, or a tincture that would fix the hangover gradually and gently. Brooke chose the former, and after a brief spike of pain in his head, his hangover was gone. Brooke and Fala spoke about the gala, and Brooke teased Fala over their and Reilly's shared affections. The two parted on good terms, having enjoyed a bit of friendly banter.
Reilly’s task involved procuring materials to fashion a gift for Renaer; her idea was an experimental combination of a Ruby of the War Mage and a Veteran’s Cane, allowing a weapon to be concealed in or as a magical ruby that also facilitated spellcasting.
Lacky went to the Dock Ward to visit one of her favorite dive bars for a bit of people watching. At the Skewered Dragon, she ordered a bottle of Dragon's Piss (as a courtesy to the bar; the bottle went undrank) and was surprised to see a former client of hers. Yorn, a half-orc bodyguard and mercenary who at one point worked with the Black Network, was the defendant in one of Lacky’s most prolific cases in which she defended him from the grievous charge of assaulting a nobleman. They spoke about choosing a dive bar over a well-off tavern, Yorn's mercenary work, and his previous marriage before parting ways.
When the party reconvened at the tavern, they prepared to meet their potential new employees. Eight individuals offered their services:
- Vowyn Marblewander, a young rock gnome girl and a student of conjuration at the House of Wonders, always accompanied by her ferret familiar Skittle.
- Upstanding Gentleman, an experienced kenku waiter formerly of Darnagal, with a number of canned phrases related to fine dining.
- Zug Zug, a full-blooded orc whose gentle nature, physical stature, and green hue charmed Yilani in particular.
- Snarf, a kobold artificer who made up for his inability to speak common with his gadgets tuned for precision cleaning.
- Eluvia Archades, spoiled half-elf heiress to the noble house Archades who was tasked by her father to acquire a job to acquire a work ethic.
- Spite Maleficarius, a comically evil tiefling bent on world domination who needed a low-key job as a cover story to avoid the law.
- Lily Conway, a country gal from Fareme in the Stoneheart Valley needing a source of income while pursuing her dreams of professional horse riding.
- Scotty Bushwhacker, Notorious Dwarven Poon-Hound, an eternally drunk “beach dwarf” with incomprehensible speech and an indescribable stench.
Portraits
The Red Spirits
Reilly Springs - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who attempts to sell her inventions to interested buyers. She has accepted membership in the Masquerade, and has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. With Renaer Ambermantle’s help, she has finally repaid her debt to Raeziel Ramrider. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown. Brooke Acropora - A charming water genasi and a skilled performer who is ‘technically’ from Revelmoore, who entered the Balladeer’s Eclipse on the fateful day of the troll attack to investigate the Black Network. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors. Megumi Sakane - A diminutive kitsune rogue and a traveling merchant, who seems to be looking for something or someone during her quest for wealth in the City of Splendors. Kind-hearted but quite avaricious, she uses her small size to her advantage as she sizes up individuals for valuables and wealth. She has revealed to the party that she must ritualistically offer 500,000 gold coins to Asmodeus by the end of the year, or her soul will be forfeit. She has invented a new persona for herself; the mysterious masked thief, Karma. Yilani Deniz - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who masquerades as a human as she works to gather information on the important figures of Revelmoore. Her cover is that of a displaced noblewoman of Khemit, who has fled the civil war there. Her companions in the Red Spirits have yet to notice her deception, nor have her associates in the Black Network. Her deeds, however, have begun to eat away at her conscience, throwing her into turmoil over siding with her new friends or siding with what she was raised to do. Lackadaisical - More commonly known as “Lacky”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. Along with Yilani, Lacky has joined the Black Network, and has also aligned with Solauvaire’s newly named Revelmoore Rangers. She was singled out and visited in a dream by an enigmatic masked drow calling himself “The Exile”.Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She accidentally revealed to Brooke that she is capable of speaking telepathically, and has promised to explain the fact to him later on.
The Exile - A mysterious, philosophical dark elf wearing a brass mask, with a metallic arm to match. He visited Lacky in her dreams via the Dream spell and asked her vague questions regarding the Underdark, the clockwork plane of Mechanus, and the nature of revolutions. Satisfied with learning more about her from her answers, he left a confused Lacky and disappeared from her dreams. Lif - A poltergeist and the former proprietor of Trollskull Manor. He was murdered forty years ago by the manor’s former owner out of jealousy for a girl he once loved. His spirit has remained in the manor, where he scared off intruders. After the party assured him that they wished to restore and reopen the tavern, Lif calmed himself and even aided in cleaning the place up. He took the liberty of arranging for interviews to fill the tavern’s staffing vacancies. Fala Lefaliir - A serene wood elven individual and the owner of Aelbwyn’s Crown, a multifaceted store that functioned as a florist, apothecary, and greenhouse. They tend gardens and supply plants to many people and places, including Ulbrinter Villa and very recently Troll Skull Manor. They and Reilly have established a rapport of romantic interest, but neither has made the first real move. Nat - A mute human girl and the ‘fighter’ of the Rat Catchers, an ‘adventuring party’ made up of three homeless urchins. Nat cannot speak, and communicates through an invented sign language made up of broken Thieves’ Cant symbols and gestures. Jenks - A human boy and the ‘wizard’ of the Rat Catchers. Jenks carries around a stuffed owlbear ‘familiar’ and keeps a bag of ‘spell components’ on his person, and is fiercely protective of his ‘spellbook’. Squiddly - A tiefling boy and the ‘rogue’ of the Rat Catchers, as well as their fearless leader. Squiddly bravely leads his companions out of trouble as often as he leads them into it. Squiddly wears a fake eyepatch, which doesn’t help his aim with his bow. Yorn - A bodyguard and mercenary who at some point worked for the Black Network. He was charged with assaulting a noble at some point, but was saved from legal repercussions by Lacky’s legal prowess. Lacky was unsure if he was still affiliated with the Black Network, or if he had a particular affiliation with the ongoing civil war within the syndicate. Vowyn Marblewander - A studious young gnomish girl, oft accompanied by her ferret familiar, Skittle. She is still getting the hang of doing complicated magic beyond Find Familiar, and has trouble controlling more complicated spells. She is the grand-niece of Xalys Marblewander, former High Dragon of Revelmoore. Upstanding Gentleman - A kenku with regal bearing and a taste for fine dining and outstanding service. Like all kenku he, can only speak in canned phrases, but he seems to have a ready store of canned phrases specifically prepared for the waiting profession. He was formerly employed at Spiggley’s Spaghetti in the city of Darnagal, but was fired for asking for a raise. Zug Zug - A hulking behemoth of a man, standing at well over 6 and a half feet with the strength to match. Zug is a full-blooded orc, which is a rarity in the civilized lands. He hails from the deserts to Revelmoore’s native, and came to Revelmoore to seek a more peaceful profession after tiring of the bloodshed practiced by his people. Snarf - An excitable kobold artificer. Cannot speak common, but can understand it more-or-less. Most of his communication takes the form of varying forms of “Meep” or displays of engineering prowess. He possesses a collection of gadgets of varying use; he seems to be less skilled overall than Reilly, but his machines are surprisingly stable. Eluvia “Lulu” Archades - The eldest daughter of Lord Archades. A very distinguished personality and clearly spoiled by the noble lifestyle, she has been tasked by her father to seek employment outside of the noble social sphere in order to instill in her a hard work ethic. She seems to express disdain for this idea, but is complying for the sake of her station. Spite Maleficarius - A comically evil tiefling man. Working at the tavern appears to be his way of establishing a cover story to lay low from the law. He seems convinced that others have not caught on to his overt malicious plotting. He has a habit of monologuing and cackling evilly, which he insists is because of a ‘condition’. The knife-sharpening thing is just a hobby of his. Lily Conway - A country gal from out west, specifically the desert town of Fareme in the Stoneheart Valley. She came to the big city to pursue her dream of becoming either a professional racing jockey or a trick rider, but she needs an income in the meantime. She is an old neighbor and childhood rival of Edea Lockehart, an adventurer known for her work in the Stoneheart Valley. Scotty Bushwhacker, Notorious Dwarven Poon-Hound - An offensively smelly “beach dwarf” who managed to avoid his parole officer long enough to arrive in Revelmoore. He seems to be eternally drunk, high, or both, and speaks only in garbled and incomprehensible ramblings. He is always one day away from paradise. Davil Cedarfall - A retired sun elven adventurer and the leader of the ‘Doom Raiders’, a beleaguered sub-faction of the Black Network. He has called for a manhunt on Skeemo Weirdbottle, a member of the Doom Raiders who has apparently turned traitor. Raeziel Ramrider - A duergar rogue and loan shark, who works as the Doom Raiders’ Master of Coin. She loaned Reilly a sum of gold at an exorbitant interest rate, but the debt has finally been paid off. She was the one to deliver news of Skeemo Weirdbottle’s supposed betrayal of the Doom Raiders. Skeemo Weirdbottle - A forest gnome alchemist and a member of the Doom Raiders. He produces potions and poisons alike for his compatriots. His traitorous nature has been exposed by Raeziel Ramrider, and Davil Cedarfall has called a manhunt against him.
