Aapep is an ancient devourer deity who embodied chaos and thus was the opponent of light. He appears in art as a giant black serpent with many coils. Aapep represented an obstacle to the daily resurrection of the sun, and was often depicted in good temples as being defeated by the sun gods. Occasionally he would be victorious in his battles with the solar gods, and the world would be plunged into darkness. Scholars believe that these victories allowed storms, darkness, rain and the terrifying eclipse of the sun to occur. They believed that prayers and incantations would help the gods in their endless nightly fight against Aepep. Some scholars speculate that the great darkness of 1491 was caused by Aapep devourering one of the Sun Gods. Aapep is one of the two most commonly worshipped deities of the Yuan-Ti. He was a multiversal power, still actively worshiped by the yuan-ti of other worlds.
