Don Duergedyn is the creator god of the Duergar, as well as a villanous trickster deity in Hill and Mountain Dwarf mythology.
"To toil is divine. From fire and rock were we hewn, and to the deep earth do we turn our hammers, that we may take the wealth we are owed." - Excerpt from the Creed of Don Duergedyn
Common dwarven lore depicts Don Duergedyn as a covetous smith deity originally named Khazok Grimforge who, out of jealousy of Dwerfater's creation of the Dwarves, sought to create his own race. He then stole away into the Underdark and forged the first Duergar out of raw magma and obsidian, and for defying Dwerfather's authority, he and his children were exiled to remain in the deep Underdark, while he was replaced as the god of the forge by Barator. Duergar creation myths differ from the standard Dwarven lore; they posit that Khazok Grimforge was a hardworking smith god who forged great works for the dwarven pantheon and inspired the spirit of creation and craftsmanship in the Dwarven people. So great did Khazok's following and material wealth grow that the rest of the Dwarven gods became envious and fearful of his power. Dwerfater gathered Khazok and his followers and stole the very essence of the earth from their souls, removing their connection to the metals and stones of their mountain homes and casting them deep into the bowels of the earth; an event immortalized as 'The Grey Exodus'. Aimless and adrift, Khazok took his weathered hammer and fashioned a pickaxe, digging through the pitch blackness until he struck magma deep in the Underdark. Using magma and the rare stones and metals of the Underdark, he reforged his followers as the first grey dwarves; the Duergar. He then adopted the name Don Duergedyn, which in the Duergar dialect of the Dwarven language means 'Lord of the Grey Exodus'. Traditional Duergar clan leaders often adopt the title 'Don' out of reverence of Don Duergedyn and his struggle. Don Duergedyn and his clergy teach his followers the value of toil and hard work, and that through sufficient labor and perseverance that their goals would be met. He encourages his children to stop at nothing to achieve their desires, be it lying, cheating, exploiting others, or even committing crimes.
