Home Purification Ritual

In the kingdom of Isturoth, nothing is more sacred than the "home". It is therefore expected that there are a number of rituals and practices that revolve around keeping one's house a comfortable, pure, clean, and safe place to live.   The primary way to ensure this is the "home purification" ritual. It calls upon Barud, God of Domesticity, to protect, bless or watch over people or places. For the most part, it involves burning specific materials and fragrances in the hearth and reciting prayers.   It is performed in times of duress or special need, on holy days, to support the construction of a building, or to bless a family or dwelling. It is a popular and often-performed ceremony because it is simple and accessible, as well as multi-purpose.   It is a ritual of purification, cleansing people and places of any obstructions or troubles. The fire and smoke are purifying elements that dispel any negative intrusions or energies that inhabit the area. It also attempts to bring the blessings and guardianship of Barud to the location, using fragrances and prayer.

Process

Firstly, a fire is lit in the hearth or fire pit. Green boughs are collected and laid out around it, along with other aromatic herbs, flowers and plants, because their smoke is fragrant and pleasing to the deity. If necessary, the vegetation is doused with water, to produce a heavier and more aromatic smoke. When the officiant is ready to begin the prayers, the boughs are laid on top of hot coals.   The officiant then begins with chanting and prayer, which differs from region to region. Sometimes the invocation involves calling out to other deities as well, just to cover all the bases. Once this process is completed, offerings are made.   The material substances that are offered into the fire vary depending on the intentions of the ritual and the elaborateness that is desired. These can include different kinds of grains, other desireable food substances, varieties of alcohol, and other things that may be deemed attractive to the deity that presides over the home. Additionally, mental offerings are made, consisting of the visualisation of all the good and fine things that the world has to offer. The act of holding precious things in mind and them offering them is symbolically very powerful.
