Isturian-Giant Wars
Once Lord Blackwood of the Embers began his campaign of expansion into the Ironstone Mountains, it wasn't long before regular skirmishes broke out between the new Isturians and those few giant clans that dug their heels in and refused to leave their ancestral home.
After a number of battles, the Isturians emerged victorious, largely due to the superior tactics and technology of Blackwood's army, and the native giants were dispersed into nomadic bands.
The Conflict
Prelude
By the time the Overlord known as Lord Blackwood had reached the mountains, he had begun a vast and ambitious campaign of conquest. Expansion came easy at first, flowing into the lush valleys like water. However, it was inevitable that eventually they would come across the first clan of giants, themselves very guarded and isolated even from other clans.
Deployment
Unavoidably, it came to a head when settlers attempted to establish homes further up mountains and deeper within the peaks. Unwilling to move out of lands that had been free of outside influence for centuries, the giants, who were normally a peaceful people, were forced to engage in skirmishes against Blackwood's empire.
Though the giants were larger and stronger, they seldom came out as victors in their skirmishes. The imperial armies were quick to adapt to their new foe, developing snares and traps for the giants so they could be brought down quickly.
The Engagement
These skirmishes led to the "Isturian-Giant War", though it was hardly such. A number of battles erupted where two or three clans had been able to band together (an event that almost never occurred prior to the invasion) and launch assaults on larger contingents of soldiers.
Victories by the giants were short-lived as they were eventually overwhelmed by waves of well-trained, well-equipped soldiers.
Outcome
The battles came to a slow, drawn-out end as the giant clans were defeated one-by-one. Eventually, those who survived only did so by avoiding any Isturian settlement and hiding in small groups that would not draw too much attention.
In general, most contingents were reluctant to pursue giants in a non-defensive attack, though there were certainly those that did such a thing. Some sort the acclaim that the title of "Giant-hunter" would bring.
Aftermath
The population of giants has been decimated, only a tenth of what it was pre-invasion. After some years, the giants would eventually appear once again, reluctantly, in small nomadic bands that did not remain in one place for too long. Enough time had passed that some would even entertain trade with the Isturians, and vice versa.

Interesting take on the theme! I find myself unsure which side is the "underdog" here; the more numerous Isturians, or the physically more powerful, but less numerous, giants, and I get the feeling I'm supposed to be unsure. Fascinating!
