Lava Eel
In the deepest caverns, tunnels and gorges of Isturoth, one may be able to find the fossilised remains of ancient marine creatures that once inhabited the region. Isturian legend holds that these creatures are all long-forgotten minions of Zurava, god of the primordial dark, and that they are born of the molten magma from deep underground.
Lava eels are a well-known archeological find; their long, snake-like spines and reptilian skulls are most easily identifiable. When people talk about creatures of the old world that lived beneath the earth, these snake-like monsters are what come to mind.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Despite their name, lava eels most likely had small limbs they used for climbing. In reality, they were probably more like salamanders that were adept at swimming and had little use for their appendages, save for clambering up wet rocks when they emerged from the water. In the early days of their discovery, it was probably thought that these were actually fins and that the creature lived exclusively in liquid.
Instead of a row of sharp teeth like wyrms, their jaws were lined with sharp bumps and grooves that could grind up any food they caught.
Civilization and Culture
History
Of course there is no way of knowing if these creatures were lava-proof (though it is fairly safe to assume they were not) however the location of their fossils has led Isturians to believe they spent their whole lives in pools of liquid magma. With only their remains to study, the mythology of Isturoth has filled in the gaps to make assumptions about the lives of these creatures.
