Resthouse
A roadside inn that was located on a well-travelled route was often referred to as Resthouse, or a "home-on-the-road". The concept of the "home" is an integral and sacred one, so it is important that there are places travellers can feel comfortable in lieu of their actual homes. These can include travelling performers, nomads, traders, diplomats, and others who must traverse long distances and spend much time away from their beloved dwelling.
Resthouses are crucial places to those who dwell in caravans, places where they can restock their supplies, embrace some modern conveniences, trade goods and services, and exchange stories. Because of this, homes-on-the-road tend to be extremely colourful, energetic, vibrant places full of music, storytelling, performances, and games.
Many stories and games are learned in these places, some even becoming local tourist traps due to their reputation for fun and amusement. Some, however, may take it too far and will even be known in the area for being a place where someone can easily lose all their money as well as their memory of the previous night. When these kinds of places are frequented by drifters, it is not unsual for unsavoury characters to come in and out, often with someone else's money in their pocket. Con artists and scammers relish the opportunity for fresh victims, along with pickpockets and muggers.
But it is not soley a hub of criminal behaviour. Resthouses are known for being a crucible of creativity, spawning games of skill and chance that end up being played by kings and queens. Bards of any calibre make an adequate living by performing at resthouses for coin, food, goods or merely trading stories. If anyone were to be looking for a good night of fun and frivolity, it would be found at a local home-on-the-road, where anyone can be made comfortable, surrounded by friendly company telling stories with a drink in hand.
