Stonebread
On the long journeys across the mountains of Isturoth, one may find themselves in need of a long-lasting food that will keep for extended periods of time, while also being hearty to the weary traveller.
Stonebread is a dense, crusty flatbread, one which doesn't perish easily. It is filling on its own, however it can be added to any meager soup or stew, where it breaks apart to give it some body and thickness.
It can be made relatively quickly, easily and inexpensively, and doesn't take up much space in a travellers rucksack. For this reason, it is the perfect ration for Isturian soldiers or for emergency relief.
It's name comes from the fact that in its normal state, it is extremely hard and sometimes difficult to eat, more like a biscuit. It can be crushed into a powder and added to any mixture. Most notably, water can be added to its powdered state and if any kind of cooking plate is accessible, something resembling regular flatbreads can be made very easily.
Significance
Ordinary flatbreads using barley flour are a staple of Isturoth. While popular, cheap and easy to make, these breads don't often travel long distances well, particularly when exposed to the elements, becoming victims of insects and mould. Stonebread is a natural evolution of these foods, being a form of flatbread that is so dense and hardy that it doesn't expire easily and travels well.
It has become the widely-established food of travellers, pilgrims, soldiers and anyone else who travels the many roads and mountain passes of Isturoth and needs a cheap, durable and versatile food to keep them going.
