The Revenant Knight

An underlying message to the mythology of Drevok and the values they embody, concerns the acceptance of death and one's allotted time in the world. One particularly memorable fable that covers this area is the tale of the Revenant Knight.

The Story

Long ago, during a time of war and unrest, a great many battles took place. One soldier, who's name has been lost to time, stood out in this conflict. With every battle they fought, they honed their skills and tempered their blade with more bloodshed. They revelled in the slaughter and sought greater and greater challenges to overcome. Many feared what they had become, even from their own side.   Inevitably, they found themselves in a battle they could not best, hopelessly outnumbered and overwhelmed. With a heavy toll, the soldier was finally slain, though it was far from over.    The soldier was not yet through with fighting. While sleeping Drevok whispered out to them, they refused the call. Rather than accept their fate, they chose to continue living and rejected a burial. Through sheer force of will and the power they had attained, they fought against the natural process Drevok had set.   When the soldier continued to walk the earth, they soon found their body rotting. The complexion grew pale and their eyes became dark and sunken. They no longer desired food, water or sleep. Their lust for battle and for life itself became a mere memory and they were left as little more than a shadow.    All that remains of the soldier now wanders alone, little more than a shadow, a haunted spirit in a decomposing body. It is said that where they tread, they leave behind more corpses that seek to continue their life beyond the time that was given to them, inspiring them to rise from their tombs and graves. In many cases, they are a beacon for those who died without being proper funeral rites.
