The Mountain King's Vestments
So ya're trying to tell me ya've never heard of the Mountain King's Vestments? And ya've lived with us for how long? We'll need to find ya a storyteller right away, ya've learned nothing at all if ya don't know nothing of those...Back in the cloudy past, long before the Gashir in the ancient days of the duergar of Renath, they were ruled by an all-powerful king. The greatest armoursmiths, tailors, jewellers and goldsmiths who'd ever lived fashioned a set of three items to be a symbol of his immense power: a robe, a set of plate armour, and a bejewelled crown. These are the Mountain King's Vestments, and their disappearance is the root of the duergar nation's issues to this very day.
Lost and Never Found
Not long after their creation in the famous smithies and craft guilds of Gåwarsathin, the Mountain King's wealth and influence drew the eye of the Dark Ones. Using their propensity for magical trickery, the Dark Ones killed the king and stole the Vestments, hiding them somewhere in their vast empire. The resulting bickering among the King's Banners made it easy for the Dark Ones' armies to swoop in and lay waste to the kingdom. The duergar were sold into slavery to their empire, and the location of the Vestments was completely lost. In the centuries since their freedom, the search for the Vestments has reached the status of a fool's errand. That being said, the Banner of Gåwarsathin has been very close to discovering the location of the Crown of Favours for quite some time and have leads on the other two items, and other Banners have been searching for the Vestments with a certain fervour as well. The issue is that some evil force has been shipping and moving the items around the world for centuries, foiling their attempts to even catch a glimpse of them...The Search Continues
Various magical and non-magical research methods over the centuries have built up a remarkably-detailed portrait of the Vestments ; They have been lovingly sketched by duergar artists and described in poetry and stories since time immemorial. The person or people who return the Vestments to the descendants of the Mountain King would be hailed as the greatest heroes their culture has ever known. The Vestments:
The Crown of Favours is a golden crown whose metal appears to be magically warped into shape rather than beaten or crafted. It looks like the intertwined paths of two comets. Blue and black gems are set along the comets' paths and the Crown shimmers even in the absence of light The Robe of Brilliance is a robe made of a dark green velvet-like silk. The duergar believe the colour green was associated with wealth and intelligence, but to drive the point home they used cloth-of-gold along the hems and gold plated buttons. The Robe is rumoured to give off natural heat even on the coldest peaks. The Armour of Stone is a suit of dark steel plate armour that appears to have light cracks running through it like the veins in marble. The crest of the Mountain King, a shining key surrounded by a circle of trees and mountains, is emblazoned on the chest. The armour is rumoured to be extremely heavy when carried, but the wearer can move in it as it were as light as cloth.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
