Treaty of the Curaith Sea

We, the free peoples of the world of Dreandril, have suffered for centuries under the weight of the oppressive Zaraz-kin. That time has now ended, and we must take action to prevent another power from destroying our hard work and plunging our world into another age of darkness...
— Prelude to the Treaty
The Treaty of the Curaith Sea is the central document in the history of the peoples of Dreandril. Signed by representatives of all major races, it is a snapshot into the unity that could have been if the Infinite War's squabbling and carnage hadn't become the norm instead not long after its ratification.

Preamble

The fall of Wretched Penumbra earlier that summer left behind a terribly large power vacuum. Without the deadly imperium of the Zarkul Empire to oppress the peoples of Dreandril, many suddenly found themselves wondering what the new age of the world would look like. Those in positions of power in the world, whether they be nobles of small fiefs or chieftains of large nations, were worried that chaos would shortly ensue if the peoples of the world did not find commonality of purpose without the evil of the Zaraz-kin to fight.   This led to the convening of a large meeting of all world leaders that could get passage to what later became the city of Icewind at the shores of the Curaith Sea. Lizardkin clans, Stalwartkin holdens, Smoothkin kings and Lithekin princes, as well as a smattering of dignitaries from hundreds of other lands, all met in the cold north of Algonas to hammer out a plan for what the world would look like now.

Clauses and Goals

Over the course of the few months that the leaders of the free world were stationed in Icewind, they hammered out a list of requests, wishes and hopes for their new world:
  • The destruction of Clan Pekhar and other kin of Dreandril who were sympathetic to the Zarkul Empire and were still causing havoc throughout the world;
  • Foster international cooperation between the various kin so that if an evil like the Zaraz-kin were to come to Dreandril in the future, they would meet with strong and solid resistance from all kin; and
  • The creation of nations from the ruins of the Zarkul Empire by using existing ethnic and species boundaries to help keep kin together and promote the freedom of all kin.
The first two points were relatively simple to guarantee, as the ten lizardkin clans were already embroiled in the search for Clan Pekhar's hideouts and without the Zaraz-kin the rest of the world could work together with ease. The difficulty of the treaty came with the final point, as many did not know where to draw these new boundaries so as to seem fair to all parties. For example, there had been much cooperation between the Vitlesh smoothkin and the Clan Mosinar lizardkin during the Rising, so plans were struck to have them be one nation despite both nations insistence that the relationship would not work. The treaty was signed, but many nations walked away from the conference feeling snubbed.

Afterword

While the cooperation wished by the kin that had signed the Treaty came to pass, tensions were not exactly fixed. The Valiant Brand, for example, found itself in ownership of a small amount of territory, leading to them trying to expand at the expense of the Slimekin of Viironaa to the south. Tensions broke into open conflict, and more and more attempts by the alliance of the kin of the world only embroiled them deeper and deeper into war. The Infinite War began, which has plagued the world for nearly eight centuries now.

Signatories

The treaty itself was signed into effect by representatives of all the races that fought against the Zaraz-kin, including one member of each of the ten Lizardkin clans and the rulers of dozens of Smoothkin nations. It is meant to be the will of all people, so no one in attendance was forbidden from signing it, no matter their station. Currently-extant copies of the Treaty contain the signatures of simple sailors, great rulers, and servants.

Timing

The treaty entered into effect on the 1st day of the new year, which was colloquially called "the first year after the Rising" in many documents. The date stuck, as years after were called the second year after the Rising, the fifth year, the tenth, etc. Shortened to a number and the initialism "PR" or "Post-Rising," this age appeared to be one of healing and recovery...until the Infinite War began.
