The University of Lille

Come join the faculty of the best university in Europe

A word from the dean

Since its foundation in 1667, the University of Lille has been one of France's unquestionable jewels. Frequented by prestigious students and faculty alike, its past members populate our history books and include many kings, generals, scientists, scholars and artists, with the most prestigious of course being our previous dean, His Majesty King Bernard de Flanders.   The excellence of Lille's teachings and the quality of the research led by its faculty are proven by our constant attraction of the best fundings and sponsorships. The other French institutions begrudge our closeness to power and His Majesty's favouritism, yet they forget that our successes are also due to our fierce defense of our value of excellence at all costexcellentia quocumque pretio.   Lille is always looking for skilled scholars and researchers to grow its ranks and contribute to its prestige. If you think you have what it takes, join us in shaping the future of France!

All measures for your research to thrive

Sponsors

Fundings and the powerfuls' attention are limited and fleeting, and so there is of course a fierce competitions between all universities, research organisations, and industries in France to catch them. Joining Lille will help you accomplish this, as year after year we keep getting the lion's share of them.

Ethics

An essential aspect of any research is always for it to stay within the bounds of His Majesty's laws and of good taste. With rituals having been outlawed two decades ago and the Dark Lord and foreign spies' skulking around even the most esteemed institutions, it is important for all of us to stay vigilant.   In addition to mere money, Lille's network of influence helps our faculty gain the necessary support and permission and generally grease the gears of administration. This will bring an incomparable ease to all your research and allow you to focus on what is really important: the actual magic.

Foreign links

Thanks to our strategic location at France' borders and in the heart of Flanders, Lille has strong links with foreign institutions, allowing our faculty to forge unique and prosperous collaborations with our counterparts in the Austrian Netherlands.   No such links exist with the Prussian and English enemies or with our tense neighbours in Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Nothing can be gained with allying with the Spaniards that we defeated two decades ago. Only in Lille will you gain this opportunity!

Notable faculty

The jewels among Lille's faculty. They are our most promising researchers and scholars and receive the dean's full support in the political arena. By joining Lille, you will have the opportunity to work side by side with them and to benefit from their expertise.

Campus

Safe
Our walled campus is equipped with special wards that keep the university safe; even more, we are also at the heart of the wards of the city of Lille and where they are keyed. Thanks to this, we have a special division of the army constantly watching over us and ensuring our safety.   Army postings: checking everyone's comings and goings at all the doors into the campus walls, at the dean's office to guard him, at the ward rooms, and at any places where suspicious magics are detected.

Steeped in history
Our ancient buildings are an incredible example of French-Flemish architecture, with their classic façades of light red bricks and white limestone and sandstones, and their grey roofs tiles and slates. The campus is also filled with reminders of our history, with many statues and paintings of our famous alumni, selected to embody the values we want our students to emulate.   Examples of values: bold scientific curiosity, cut-throat ambition, and loyalty to France at all cost.

Elegant and comfortable
Our campus comprises teaching and reception halls and offices, but also apartments for our students and faculty. Everything has been done to make Lille fit for the noblest and most powerful individuals in the kingdom.   Latest amenities available: running water, magical lights, and silencing wards to keep students' shenanigans outside of our homes.

State-of-the-art equipment and labs
All the latest equipment and structures are in place to help you achieve greatness. Never again lag behind your colleagues because of a lack of access to the best tools!   Examples of tools: rune labs with wards to keep contaminations out and explosions under control, the purest recently-discovered alchemical and chemical substances, and access to now-outlawed documents granted upon His Majesty's special permission.

Surroundings

The University of Lille is located at the heart of Lille, a powerful and strategic city filled with a rich history and culture and whose inhabitants have long traditions of magical craftsmanships and innovations. Lille is also at the heart of Flemish prosperous trade networks, allowing us easy access to all goods and resources which all researchers need.   Most important trades: textiles, minerals and chemicals, and metallurgy.

A state-of-the-art education program

The officer track program

This is the jewel of Lille and of all of France and forms the future elite of the army.
  • Duelling: Fighting with and without magic, with and without a variety of weapons. For fighting against other elite mages on the battlefield or against a horde of weak common soldiers.
  • Runes: The design and tracing of runic diagrams, including a lot of mathematics. For making defensive wards and weapons.
  • Engineering: The mathematics and physics behind the making and use of infrastructure, maps, and weapons.
  • Alchemy: Chemistry, magic infusion of chemicals, and forging of artefacts and weapons.
  • Tactic: Tactic and strategy for individual fights, battles and entire wars. Including the study of military history and economics.
  • Rhetoric: For team building and leadership. Including sociology and management.
  • Politics: For handling international relationships, the royal court, and rivalries between officers.
  •   Anecdote: Students in the officer track are taught drawing for making running designs, engineering plans, and map, but practice this more by making caricatures of their teachers.

    Other programs

  • Faculty of Sciences: Mathematics, runes, chemistry, alchemy, physics, biology, engineering sciences... Students will become scientists and elite craftsmen.
  • Faculty of Medicine: Biology, healing magic, pharmacy, ethics... Students will become physicians and pharmacists of all specialties.
  • Faculty of Law: Legislation, history, politics, rhetoric, ethics... Students will become lawyer, judges, policy makers, and politicians.
  • Faculty of Art: Drawing, painting, theatre, poetry, literature... Students will become artists, authors, journalists, and politicians.
  •   Organisation: Theory lectures are public and free and take place in the evening while practicals are set during the day. This allows for a hundred of free auditors from the city of Lille to assist to them (mainly manufacture workers and craftsmen). This has contributed to the innovation spirit of the City of Lille.

    Respect of the highest standards

    Selection of the students

The selection of students is strict and divided into several phases:
    • First the students who can pay the entrance exam fee are pitted against each other in duels and oral exams, and their performance is marked. Students with the best marks are admitted and allowed to chose their field of study.
    • Once a pre-determined quota is reached, the entrance fee is lowered to allow more candidates to join leftovers from the first round. The best students of this lots are also admitted and allowed to choose fields with remaining spots.
    • After several rounds of fees-lowering, the last round does not have fee at all and also include studentship applicants.
The mixing of social classes in Lille ensures that there is a healthy competition between students that pushes them to do their best. The quality of our faculty also plays a large role in convincing students to put in the efforts to reach their potential and bring prestige to Lille.

    deToulouse
    M. Aymeric de Toulouse
The heir of our Majesty's esteemed First Councilor and the most promising of our students until the arrival of the Chosen One. He has been destined for greatness since birth, and Lille was chosen among all to help him reach it.   Constantly surrounded by hangers-on and sycophants, everything comes easy to him and he needs to be challenged and pushed to excel. Only the best professors have proven able to catch and retain his attention.
    M. Flavien Rivoire
The Chosen One in person, destined to one day vanquish the Dark Lord! An unsignificant orphan in Lyon, abandoned by his parents and society until one of the Dark Lord's attacks revealed his unique powers. His Majesty has chosen Lille as the best place to bring him up to par with his classmates and propel him towards the stars.   His lack of education and the need to teach him alongside the future officers of his army present unique defy that only the best teachers will be able to face successfully.

    Catteau
    Scholarship students
Lille very generously grants several scholarships to the most talented and promising young people in the region so that they can join any of our programs, including our very prestigious officer track. Their last recipient has been M. Rémi Catteau, one of our head cook's children.   These are mannerless children without the natural elevation of mind of our other students; teaching them alongside one another is a constant struggle that nevertheless push both groups to reach beyond their natural limits.

    Endorsements

    From an insider faculty
Lille is an amazing university where to work to support our career. We always do favours to students, like giving them extra tutorials and helping them out of troubles when they're caught doing a prank, which creates great opportunities to get an in with their influential parents and thus to gain research sponsorship!

    From an outsider faculty
Lillois students are all stuck-up spoilt brats that cannot be disciplined properly because of their influential parents. Spending any time with them in Lille even only as a visiting scholar is hell!

    From our students
Our teachers are so focused on their rivalries that they care a tremendous lot about their reputations. Thanks to this, we can all rest easy, reassured that our practicals will be especially safe, as an accident would kill all their hopes of promotions!

The university welcomes applications year-round from the best, brightest and most promising individuals in the Kingdom of France.

    Author's Notes

This university is entirely fictional but inspired from the University Catholic of Lille (location, building, logo) and the University of Lille (evening courses opened to the public).   This university is the setting of one of my novels. I'm currently revising the novel and I'll be looking for beta readers in a few months - if you're interested in helping, I'll post about it in this world and on my WA profile.

I adore everything about this, Amélie -- the portraits, the reviews, the consistent "voice" that reads like a pamphlet, you did a wonderful job as usual!

Thanks! <3 It was really a super fun article to make, and I'm really happy with how it makes a great introduction in to this setting now :D

Nice article! I absolutely love the tooltip design and had fun reading all of them to see Adélaïde's opinions. It sounds like quite a cutthroat (literally) university and is incredibly well thought out. I loved every part of it.

Lilliana Casper   I don't comment much, but I love reading your articles! Please check out my worlds, Jerde and Tread of Darkness.

Thanks! <3 I'm very proud of those tooltips XD Yes, it's a really cutthroat place, and the sudden arrival of the Chosen One is not going to help, with the sudden attention of the King and the Dark Lord in addition to everything else...

I love the commentary from Adélaïde all throughout the article. Honestly, not a school I would want to go to. Sounds too cut-throat (literally?) for me.   Great article as always! :D

Thanks <3 That school is slightly better for students than for the staff. Especially if you're rich XD But that's why poor Adélaïde is so desperate for a promotion, so that she can have enough status to be respected and protected from politics...
