Obsidian

Obsidian is a black glassy looking stone that is created by cooling magma. It can be mostly found in the mountains near by the city of Greenfall. There is very little else where in the world. Many visitors in the city do not understand it's fascination with the stone.
In the city itself there is an almost holy reverence held for the substance. This came about around the year 1000 when the monarchy started to use it as a symbol for their family. They started to adorn the palace and their other residences with the substance and started to craft objects most commonly jewelry with the stone.
With the royal family adopting the material the rest of the city started to as well. This happened from the top down with the nobles being the first to adopt the material in common uses as well as the other government buildings. Soon almost everything associated with the city had obsidian in it's walls or above the door frames. All the guards barracks did as well. It started to become a symbol of good luck. Myths started to circular that a wall with obsidian in it can not fall. Necklaces and other jewelry was also crafted and worn as a symbol of fortune and something to keep the wearer safe.
as the years went on and the practice become more and more common even the poorest citizens started to bye the rocks to place in their homes. They would save up all their money to that they come buy a single stone, so they can put it in their house or wear it themselves. The city is filled with stories of people obtaining a stone then getting a promotion or conceiving a child when they could not before.
