Causality Agent

Everything you see in the Matrioska Multiverse may constitute spoilers for other worlds I'm working on. Proceed with caution!
A Causality Agent is a member of the Causality Corps under the auspices of ComInDS. Skilled and morally flexible covert enforcers of the rules surrounding the use of The Word and dissemination of the knowledge of higher order realities within instances, Causality Agents are feared for their license and capabilities even beyond the instances themselves.

Career

Qualifications

A prospective Causality Agent must have experienced at least once cycle within an instance whose laws of physics mirror that of the Origin Instance (the physical reality beyond the Matrioshka Multiverse. For this reason, many more Causality Agents are Instance Blanks than might otherwise be expected for limbs of ComInDS, which is normally more keen on recruiting choirs and elders for mission-critical roles. An agent must also exhibit a talent for subterfuge, the ability to keep important secrets for up to the span of an entire lifetime, the moral flexibility required to undertake actions which would facially be considered extreme in the service of the Substrate's goals, and an unshaking loyalty to the Substrate and the Matrioshka as a whole.

Operations

Tools

An embodied Causality Agent has the unique ability to percieve the type of blank inhabiting the bodies of others in the world into which they have been embedded and can, to some extent, detect the level of Word use capability that blank possesses.

Workplace

Causality Agents are embodied within instances among the instance blanks through conventional means, arriving in the world through an apparently normal birth or appearing as 'orphans' in isolated parts of the 'world.' Unlike instance blanks or those otherwise traversing the cycle of death and rebirth, Causality Agents retain their memories and command of the Word. They must exercise extreme discipline in the use of these gifts, however, as they have been imbedded among the peoples of the world to ensure that physical laws are followed, the Word is not discovered or abused, and knowledge of the higher order reality of the Matrioshka is not discovered until ComInDS determines that it is safe for this development to occur.   Most Causality Agents live full, normal lives among the peoples of the instances, even taking spouses from among other Causality Agents, having families, developing frendships and associations, and carrying on in mundane professions until their natural time of death comes around. In rare cases, however, the Causality Agents in an instance will discover that something is amiss and will act with coordination in secret to ensure that normalcy returns to the instance once more. For example, in the Manifold Sky instance, the causality agent Eline Messer attempted to assassinate the terrorist Cyrus A. Vinge - also known as The Garbage Man for his supernatural powers - for weaponising his instinctual knowledge of the Chime construction for 'teleportation' and 'summoning' abilites. Causality Agents show little remorse for even the most bloody of deeds within an instance so long as doing so has the potential to protect all the other people therein by eliminating dangerous sources of corruption and other threats to the instance as a whole.

Dangers & Hazards

Embodied Causality Agents must be prepared to suffer and die as mortal beings, all without revealing any secrets, for the sake of their cause. Every Causality Agent knows that he or she will win no accolades for his or her service within their embodied lifetime, wherein they may experience all the great disgusts, discomforts, and indiginities of the flesh, but serve a noble purpose that will be rewarded thereafter. Moreover, if a Causality Agent makes a mistake, they may face approbrium from their fellows in the Substrate while also being forced to live with the knowledge that they may have caused the suffering or demise of other blanks - both embodied and not - by letting slip knowledge that threatens the integrity of the instances.
