Eastoia MInor

Demography and Population

The population of Eastoia Minor was divided into three races and two ethnicities during the years of its existence. 45% Human, 45% Halfling, 10% Elf. Of those racial groups, 80% of them were Anglico while 20% were Norsekin. The Anglaco people mostly occupied the inland farmland of Eastoia Minor, while the Norsekins having been descendants of raiders and immigrants were more commonly found along the coastline.

Birthrate:

Commoner women in Eastoia minor typically had 6-7 children. Of those children, about 50% would make it to 17, adulthood for commoners. Noble women typically had 8-10 children with 70% surviving till 15, adulthood for the nobility.

Life Expectancy:

Once a person reached adulthood they were expected to live to be around 54 years. The nobility, excluding factors such as war, duels, and other political disputes, were expected to live to be 61 years old. Life expectancy for newborns and children was 16. This means that if you managed to survive to be 16 you could expect to live into your early 50s.

Territories

Eastoia Minor originally comprised a small area of Eastoia to the east side of the right side of the Spliton River and south of the Ever Tree forest. These lands were the lands the people had lived in for as long as their oral histories could recall. By the end of its existence, the kingdom's borders would include all of Eastoia and parts of inland Northoia.

Military

The Military of Eastoia Minor was comprised of nobles and their knights and whatever peasants they could afford to levy for battle.

Technological Level

The technology of Eastoia Minor was early medieval.

Agriculture:

Carruca and Ard plows were in use. The Horse collar had allowed Eastoia Minor to use horses to perform fieldwork instead of the typical Oxen of this time period, and along with this horseshoes came into common use amongst the nobilities horses allowing them to respond quicker to Norsekin invasion. Three Field rotations were pioneered by the Anglaco people and used universally throughout Eastoia Minor. In a three-field system, one field holds a spring crop, such as barley or oats, another field holds a winter crop, such as wheat or rye, and the third field is an off-field that is left alone to grow and is used to help feed livestock. The livestock also fertilizes the off-field so that it will be ripe for future crop growth. Fertilizer was also a development of the Anglico people, who had special methods of enhancing fertilizer to keep fields healthy for longer. Eastoians used ship mills to mill grain.

Architecture and construction:

The construction of peasant homes was very basic and often poorly done. However, farm workers had discovered the ability to create artesian wells to better irrigate crops.

Books, paper, and reading:

Anglicans had long discovered the ability to make parchment from animal skins, and use scaple like instruments to lightly scrape letters into these parchments. Books would then be bound with thread weaved from various materials, but most often various plant fibers and grasses.

Math, Science, and Learning:

Eastoians mostly used the Dwarfish Numeral number system (roman numerals), but some scholars and proficient nobles would prefer to use Gnomish numerals (Arabic numbers).

Miscellaneous

Eastoia Minor was responsible for creating Chess a game that would spread throughout the world in the years to come. In this early version of the game, there was no queen piece and there were only 5 pawns. The rules of movement also allowed for quicker games.

Military Technology

Eastoians knew how to create quilted armor and Cuir Bouilli. Quilted armor was usually just a jacket made of thick linen and wool meant to pad or soften the impact of blunt weapons and light blows. Cuir bouilli was made by boiling leather in either water, wax, or oil to soften it so it can be shaped, it would then be allowed to dry and become very hard. Stirrups were invented by Kinranese nomads in what is today Kinra. They were introduced in Eastoia Minor around the year 200 DBN. They allowed a mounted knight to wield a sword and strike from a distance leading to a great advantage for mounted cavalry, the main form of offense for Eastoia.

Religion

The main religion of Eastoia Minor was Light Duelism, the worship of the Lord of Light. This religion wielded little political power beyond the judging of criminals if their nobles would even allow them to do that. The next largest religion was the Norse pantheon, which believed in the Norse gods. This religion was taboo but not outright forbidden amongst the peasantry or nobility, long as they still allowed for the worship of The Lord of Light amongst their people. The next largest was the forbidden Dark Duelism faith, which worshipped the Lord of Darkness. Even being accused of worshiping the Lord of Darkness could result in it witch hunts and burnings.

Foreign Relations

Eastoia Minor had little diplomatic relations with other fledgling kingdoms of Northkatolia. Norseka was the exception, with there essentially being a state of war between the two nations until the dissolution of Eastoia Minor and the founding of Eastoia Proper.

Laws

The Monarch of Eastoia Minor had the power to create laws that would affect the entire Kingdom, with the aid and guidance of clergy. That being said during this early period of time it was extremely difficult to enforce said laws on a noble to noble level, and it would remain this way until the end of the kingdom. Because of this loose organization, many nobles had their own laws that they would enforce upon their lands. At this point in history the clergy did not allow laws to be written, as they believed that the only laws to be written down were the laws of The Lord of Light and to codify laws of mortals would be tantamount to heretical action and subject to immediate exile. Due to the weakness of the clergy though a noble could choose to ignore the verdicts or judge a criminal themselves, though they'd risk the ire of the religious peasant class.

Trial of Light and Darkness.

Typically the process of law and order involved a peasant reporting a crime to a noble who would then actually decide if what was described was a crime. The local priest would then prepare for trial. For less serious crimes they would employ a Trial of Light, which involved the accused striping naked and laying chest first on an altar in the open. They would lay there for 3 days only leaving to use the bathroom, and if they had developed sunburn on their back they were deemed guilty. For more serious crimes a trial of Darkness was employed, which involved locking the accused in a dark dungeon for 3 days. If when the accused emerged into the sunlight and they closed their eyes they were guilty, if they merely squinted or kept their eyes open they were innocent.

Agriculture & Industry

Eastoia Minor was an agrarian nation through and through. It comprised great grain plains and sizeable aspects of animal husbandry. Industrial activities like smithing or mining were practically nonexistent on a commercial level, so things like iron and weapons were imported by traveling Dwarfish merchants or taken from Norsekin raiders.

Trade & Transport

Trade in Eastoia Minor was always done on a micro level, meaning it changed drastically depending on which part of the kingdom one found themselves in. Nobles would often trade grain, artwork, weapons, and literature amongst themselves in bartered deals, and peasants did the same amongst their small village communities and downs. When merchants arrived in towns and villages they would engage in bartering as well, and sometimes used coinage for large transactions with nobles or local figures. Most transportation of wares was done via cart, but a significant amount of trade would be done along the Spliton River after Eastoia Minor would take control if the city of Spliton.

Education

Education was very poor in Eastoia Minor, with even many nobles not being able to read or write. Generally speaking around 10 percent of the entire nation was literate. That being said, despite no formal education Eastoians were masters of agriculture and even at this point in history were said to be able to grow anything and receive high yields.

Infrastructure

Eastoian Minor infrastructure was severely lacking. The poor agrarian nation was unable to afford the materials or expertise to construct bridges or pave roads, so for the duration of the entire kingdom, they relied upon infrastructure built by the Norsekins during their occupation. Villages were often unwalled and venerable to attack, and Towns would usually be only able to build palisades and small wooden gates. Nobles however could afford to construct decent fortifications, so when there were raids the peasants would typically retreat to their local rulers' keep. This centralized villages and towns to be close to their noble's keep, which then allowed for nobles to closely monitor and ensure they received their dues from the peasants.
