A Gravity Field Grapple or Attractor/Repulsor, ccommonly known as a Tractor Gun is an energy projection tool modified for specialized combat roles. A Tractor Gun's functional core is a graviton generator, similar to those used on tractor beams or shipboard gravity generators. The generator projects a directional, adjusted graviton field, attracting or repulsing objects in its path. Field grapples were first developed as cargo manipulator devices that were used to move around large containers in zero g conditions. The tightness of the graviton field and its intensity can be regulated, allowing the user itself to maneuver in zero g environments. Polarity can also be reversed and throttled. A Gravity Grapple is said to be difficult to operate, akin to piloting a ship and expertly operating a rip saw all at once.
Tractor Guns became a "thing" after UNE engineers discovered that with the field safeties off a Gravity Grapple could be used to very quickly pull in small objects and just as easily "shoot them" outwards by focusing . In zero-gravity environments projectiles propelled by the Tractor Gun can have infinite speed and range but when the device is used in average gravity conditions, the force dropoff in exponential making the weapon effective only at short to medium range.
