Ice-shade
The ice-shade is a large insect like creature that lives in the frozen northern ice fields of the continent of Halconiket. Adult ice-shades' bodies are from 6 to 10 feet from head to stinger. There bodies are divided into three distinct sections; the head, the thorax and the abdomen.
The head is typically 1 to 2 feet in diameter, roughly round with two large compound eyes near the top and front. Two sets of sharp mandibles grow out from around the mouth of small sharp fangs, these mandibles hold their unfortunate prey while their small mouth parts nibble away flesh from bone, often while the prey still lives. Two flexible feelers grow from the side of the head out to around 4 or 5 feet when they are fully extended, these curl back against the sides of the head when not in use. The head is smooth, hard chiton typically of a pale pink or light tan color, depending on season and snow fall.
The entire bug is light colored and blends with the ice and snow of their home territory, their long multi-jointed legs are usually white with opaque, even clear thick hair like protrusions overing them. These hair like organs are sensitive to vibrations in the air and ground as well as sensitive to heat to help it hunt the warm-blooded prey on the ice.
Eight legs sprout from its thorax. The first two are used more for sensing the air and grabbing at prey, with large claws on the end of each leg. Their other legs end in sharp split small claws that allow the ice-shade to skitter across smooth, slick ice as well as up walls and cliffs as easy as a person might cross a grassy field. The thorax is larger than the head both in width and length and is covered with a fine thing layer of a white hair-like growth. These hairs are fine and sharp, running a bare hand across this covering would result in hundreds of small cuts. The poison secreted by the hairs would cause a person to become quite sick and likely die if not treated quickly and with the correct antidote.
The abdomen of the ice-shade is large and bulbous, warm to the touch and covered with fine, short, fur. This fur is often worn or sold as a very insulative, high quality leather by the Tribes of Uhl. The abdomen of the ice-shade is the only part of the insect not covered in a hard chiton and is the part most prized by those that hunt this animal. The meat inside this part of the animal is highly prized as a delicacy across Halconiket, but it is difficult to procure as well as transport as the meat tends to go rancid quickly unless packed in ice, even then, the meat only keeps for a couple of weeks.
Ice-shades are territorial, effective fighters, agile and cooperative in family groups. Family groups of these spider-like creatures have been known to take down and consume young dragons and adult ulbanto . Ice-shades do not hunt or eat folotopi.
