Mandricourt
Mandricourt was once the capital city of the Kingdom of Mandricourt. The Kingdom spanned the Great Divide and built the great bridge that spans that gap today. Its sister city Halgran held the eastern side of the bridge and Mandricourt held the western side. Between the two, they controlled the only access across the Divide for almost 1000 turns.
Mandricourt has remained occupied and active since its founding in 651 PB. The fortress on the hill at the western base of the great bridge across the Great Divide provided it a perfect place to control access to the bridge and, more importantly, tax those wanting to cross here.
In turn 825, King Helmutous III lead his army across the bridge, then just a wagons wide wooden structure hung from great cables across the gorge, taking the city of Halgran by surprise and capturing it. The much smaller city of Halgran became a part of the growing Kingdom of Mandricourt. King Helmutous III began construction of a grand bridge across the great canyon, using the wealth of both Mandricourt and Halgran.
The bridge was completed in turn 878 under the rule of King Helmutous IV. The completion of the bridge brought great wealth to Mandricourt, and the city and Kingdom grew. The city was built of stone from the desert to the north and was a wonder to behold at its peak. Great towers rose to the sky, huge libraries lined streets and a whole section of town was dedicated to theaters and places of entertainment. Mandricourt was known as the place to go for everything that was good, decadent, and expensive. Halgran also grew and prospered, but was known more for its temples and piousness.
For a thousand turns the Kingdom of Mandricourt maintained control over access across the Great Divide, but as all things do, things changed and another bridge opened despite the war Mandricourt waged to prevent it. The wealth provided by the great bridge continued to flow, but not as freely as before. Mandricourt adjusted and became a center of banking for a long time, revitalizing the city and its inhabitants.
Eventually the cities grew apart in their philosophies and this lead to their down fall as The Arrangement of Peace eventually expanded eastward, conquering Mandricourt and ending its time as a city of disrepute.
Halgran was able to resist the advances of The Arrangement of Peace and the influence of the Church of Peace, allying itself with the new country of Selioria and eventually becoming part of that country.
Even today the city is impressive. The rule of the Church and The Arrangement has changed the behavior and flow of riches into the city, but the stone edifices and towers continue to impress those new to the city.
