Rishmond

Wizard

As seen in
Personal communication from Ele Walsing, Head of Candidate Evaluation, Wizard's Counsel, to the King of Malminar

Your Royal Highness,   Since the founding of Malminar and the advent of keeping records on the Wizards of the Kingdom, few have surpassed or equaled young Rishmond's evaluation scores, our venerated First Mage Tybour chief among those. His aura denotes a powerful connection to Magic as does his apparent unconscious use of magic to the benefit of his life and health. It has been witnessed by this esteemed counsel member as well as a number of others that he has prodigious luck and it has been confirmed that this luck is very much the direct manipulation of magic by his unconscious self to keep himself safe. It does not appear to always transfer to those around him as one of our experiments unfortunately demonstrated. That soldier will recover but may not ever walk easily again.   Rishmond's grasp of magical principles is quite quick. He has a lot to learn as he hasn't had any instruction, formal or informal, in his professed 15 turns of life, but he will be easy to teach. He will, however, need to be carefully monitored during instruction as his ease with magic makes him a bit reckless. He doesn't appear to be concerned with being cautious, likely due to his inherent use of magic to make his own luck. When first taught the spell to levitate small objects, Rishmond immediately attempted to apply the principle to a much larger object than intended. This attempt should have failed, and would have with just about any other young Wizard, except for Rishmond's considerable strength with magic. Suffice it to say, the young Wizard was able to pick up a significant portion of the south courtyard wall and move it several feet inward, creating quite a panic throughout the testing grounds. He had no concern or thought of failure while performing this very new skill despite the fact he was standing right next to said wall and lifted it directly over his head! We prevented him from attempting to put it back, telling him that the attempt would frighten the staff and animals in their pens. He seemed to accept that at face value.   Which brings me to my next point about the young man. Calling it a concern would not be an overstatement. Rishmond is quite affable, incredibly so, to the point of naivete. It is the counsel's worry that he could be convinced, under the right circumstances, to do incredibly destructive things if he were asked in a nice enough way, or by a person he likes, even a little.   This brings me to my next point of concern and that is the friendship between Rishmond and First Mage Tybour. Now, normally friendship is a great thing and I am especially pleased to see Tybour making a friend, but to put these two together is like extinguishing a house fire with fuel-oil. They feed off each other and encourage each other to try things dangerous to both themselves and anyone and everyone around them! These two should be kept apart as much as possible until at least young Rishmond has been taught caution, especially with magic! I would not suggest we forbid their friendship, because we all know Tybour will choose to always do what is forbidden over what is right if expressly forbade. I fear forbidding their friendship would just cause them both to pursue it in secret, but they should be monitored and as much control put on them as we can manage.   Ele Walsing, Head of Candidate Evaluation, Wizard's Counsel of Malminar

Rishmond never knew any relatives. He was brought to one of the many harsh The Church of Peace run orphanages in the city of Mott in the country called The Arrangement of Peace days after birth and his parents were never found. The nuns who ran the orphanage were not kind but they weren't particularly cruel either. They were however, strict with both the rules of the house as well as the rules of the Church. It was not a pleasant, easy life for a child.   Rishmond learned to keep his head down and do as he was told early in life even before leaving the orphanage. When he was just 6 turns old, he and other orphans of age were "employeed" by a rich businessman in Mott as a source of cheap labor in local factories. Thanks to his uncanny luck, while being transferred to the factory Rishmond was forgotten in a dark corner of a large wagon, sleeping under the dirty straw on the floor. He woke in the dark, early morning alone and made his way onto to the streets of the slums of Mott. He quickly learned to take care of himself, where to hide, when to run, where to get enough to eat to stay alive. He learned to survive on the streets of the slums and near the docks. He avoided the press gangs, thieves, muggers, bullies, and straight up murderers, not to mention the monsters that sometimes lived in the sewers or prowled the dark alleys at night. Rishmond survived from age 6 to 15 on the streets of Mott before being conscripted as a deckhand on a ship with destinations unknown, well, unknown to him anyway. Just about any place had to be better than the streets and sewers in a city where being poor and alone were as much crimes as reasons for others to take advantage of you.   Despite his harsh childhood, Rishmond is unusually cheerful with a good attitude toward life, if somewhat mistrusting of new people. His incredible luck has created a mindset that believes everything will work out, as it always has. He is confident in his own abilities and is willing to try new things when opportunities arise and the odds seem stacked in his favor.   Rishmond and Tybour became fast friends despite their 10 turn age difference very quickly after they met in Retinor , capital city of Malminar, spurred on by Tybour's willingness to teach Rishmond magic and include him on the occasional adventure with the squad of Wizards and soldiers Tybour commanded. The two soon became an indomitable team, supporting each other through thick and thin, and often causing mischief together like a couple of school boys. Their friendship was a constant source of concern and consternation for the Wizard's Counsel since the two were impossible to control when together and their experiments into new magic were often reckless and dangerous.   Toby, a young boy who arrived in Retinor on the same ship as Rishmond and considered himself Rishmond's best friend in the world, was often jealous of the friendship between Tybour and Rishmond and this jealousy would become an issue in later years.

Physical Description

Body Features

Rishmond has on his back a large birth mark in shape of two wings spreading out from his backbone, across his shoulder blades to his sides. The birthmark is a concern to Rishmond due to the fact that birthmarks and birth defects were often cause for death in The Arrangement of Peace as The Church of Peace sees these as marks from a Demon.   The only reason Rishmond's birthmark did not get him executed by The Church when he was younger was a combination of a Sister with a nefarious purpose who helped keep it secret as well as Rishmond's specific magical luck.

Tybour Insuritor, First Mage of Malminar, 23 turns of age
by Ken Bignell via Midjourney
Tybour Insuritor , First Mage of Malminar in turn 3040. A powerful Wizard and a good soul. He is reckless on most occasions, throwing himself and those he leads headlong into battle without much thought to the immediate consequences, likely due to the fact that everything he tries he excels at. Everything but for personal relationships that is. He has the loyalty of his subordinates almost wholly but he does have a tendency to rub others the wrong way because he thinks he's always right, and even more annoying, almost always is.   At 23 turns old when he and Rishmond meet, he is the youngest to ever have gained the title of First Mage of Malminar three turns earlier. He settled into the role with exuberance and motivation and has been one of the best First Mages Malminar has ever had.   He and Rishmond became fast friends dispite their 10 turn age difference, with like attitude and aptitude, they are hard to beat as a team, and hard to tolerate as well for many folks!
