Vulcra

The Mountain of Life

In the middle of the vast Sekra desert, you can find the city of Vulcra. Built in many layers on the mountain it calls home, it's an impressive sight to any travelers foolish enough to traverse the desert. Inbetween the platforms you see air balloons rising and falling, taking advantage of the natural hot air vents and transporting both people and goods. Countless caves, both man built and natural, dot the mountain's sandy surface. Wooden platforms connect the caves' inhabitants to the nearest vent for balloon transport, while the significantly larger natural platforms serve as parks, marketplaces, and other public spaces. Closest to the top lies the palace, and countless architecturally similar temples can be found all around the city. A stone wall surrounds the city, with only a single gate for entry.

Demographics

Being the only city for thousands of kilometers its population has the same variation as a small country. You can find everything from beggars to nobles, craftsmen, librarians, and

Government

Vulcra has five different rulers at any point in time. They all have specific areas they're responsible for and together decide on every new law or rule. The power is handed down through blood, and the leaders can trace their lineage all the way back to the first chosen by the gods at the beginning of time. Directly under the leaders are the priests, who also tell the will of the gods. Throughout the city, you can find multiple temples with streams of people constantly going to and from the holy buildings. Next in line is the military tasked with the protection of Vulcra's citizens. Nobles don't hold any real power but are still treated better than the craftsmen, who live better lives than the common folk.

History

Vulcra started as a small refugee camp. War had forced countless people to walk across the desert. The mountain was a blessing, providing shading caves and natural springs of water. It became a necessary stop for survival, and it didn't take long before a small settlement was formed. Some people left to try the final leg of the journey, some stayed and built what the city is today.

Author's Notes

Hello! And thank you for reading my article!
This was made during the Summer Camp 2018 challenge. I won't be editing any of these to keep them for looking back on. That being said some I'm really not happy with, so I'll most likely put up an edited version at some point. If I do you will be able to find the link on the top of the page
