Devils Eye

Devil's Eye is a glowing mushroom that grows along the roots of dead or dying trees. It is harvested by alchemists and mages for it's beads of luminescent liquid, and used to cast illuminative magics such as Faerie Fire. It has a distinctive rotten smell.   The glow serves to attract insects to spread the Devil's Eye's spores in early fall. It is not uncommon for the insects in a woodland rich in Devil's Eye to have a slight red glow to them. Crawling moss is usually found near Devils Eye, as it is attracted by the light.

Products

Devil's Eye is mainly harvested for it's "eyes"; small beads containing the glowing liquid the mushroom is known for. These beads are technically edible, but not palatable. The beads are quite bitter, and sometimes boiled and cooled to create Devil's Aspic. The flesh of the fungi itself is deeply unpleasant to eat, usually compared to spoiled meat.   It is important to not wait too long until harvesting Devil's Eye. By Sign of Titans the beads begin to disintegrate and the guttation bleeds down the stem. The sticky liquid traps the bugs that once served to spread its spores, providing some extra protein to the plant as it prepares for the next year.

I love the art you've done for this. I also like that the mushroom itself tastes disgusting but people sometimes use the liquid for jam! :D

Thank you! I'm really pleased with how the design turned out too. The jam would definitely be super bitter, I don't think I'd like it, but others might!

Oh, clever fungus. Not a nice symbiotic partner, but clever.   I thing the sight is a bit scary, by the way.
